2 stage clutch

Although the 950 and the 960 both have five-speed transmissions, the 960 has two input shafts, one for the transmission and one for the PTO. A two-stage clutch won't fit, let alone work in a 950.

You need to change the transmission, clutch AND flywheel to that of a 8/960 if you want a live PTO.
That requires a double input shaft which the x50 doesn't have.

Plus, for real sticker shock, price the double clutch replacement pack from JustN's. That will help you decide against it.

I just bought a 650, and wondered about doing the same thing. Live PTO would sure make mowing simpler. So I spent this weekend looking over the parts listing and service manual. The diagram shows nearly 12 parts in the transmission alone that would need to be replaced.

That plus the double clutch pack (two discs, two plates and a few other odds and ends) plus making the alignment tool and the linkage helped me decide.

The good part about the 5 speed transmissions is that (according to the owner's manual) 1st gear is much lower than the 4, so your groundspeed will be much lower while the PTO still spins at full speed.
