2000 3cyl generator springs

A brush broke on my 72 ford 2000 3cyl gas generator. Got new brushes and then broke the spring putting it together. I am having trouble figuring out which spring to order. AI says the Lucas generator is 22756....I found one set of springs supposedly for that model but they are wound wire instead of flat , like a Clock spring which I have. Messicks cataloge isnt much help. It seems to show the generator but only 1 brush. I am confused! No part number on the generator to refer to, so it may have been replaced by aftermarket. There are springs for a Ford generator on ebay that look similar but those are for an autolite or whatever ford was using before 63. Thanks all.

Sounds like the generator might have been swapped out at some point with one that was not the original design. The parts drawing shows the brush springs were wound coils, not flat. Item number 16 in the parts drawing at the link below:

I see a post about mg springs and they sure seem to be what I have but who knows with a no name, no number generator. Thanks.

Do you have a local starter/alternator/generator shop? If so, they should be able to match up the correct springs for you.

I think I figured it out. Messicks shows one for david brown tractors that appear to have the correct springs. It was a different part number than the ford. Probably in an aftermarket swap they got switched. I will know in a few days. I ordered them..
