2001 790 Question

Is there a way to set the hydraulics to allow a back blade to float? (No down pressure.) I would like to use it to plow snow on gravel driveway and not regrade the driveway at the same time.

Not sure I understand what you mean. The three point hitch does not have down pressure. It relies on the implement weight to go down. If you put gauge wheels of some sort on the implement, then you can drop it and let it ride the ground contour. You can also set the depth of drop stop on your lever quadrant, but that can be a little i naccurate depending on what you are doing.

A rear blade requires constant attention when moving snow on an unpaved surface. I used to use a box blade pushing snow in reverse, fitted with a couple trailer tires inside at the corners. I left a bit of snow that way, but didn't take gravel either.

I guess when you moved to Florida you took care of the snow problem Frank :^) My Dad hated snow,He would say if he ever won the lotto he would buy a motor home and wire a snow shovel to the front of it,,and drive till some one asked him "whats that thing wired to front of you motor home" and that is where he would stay....

I understood that all newer tractors would have down pressure? I'm going from using a 1952 Ferguson TO 30 to a 2001 JD 790. I am very used to plowing with the ferg on gravel. Just upgraded to a tractor with a front bucket.

You were mis-lead, I don't know of any newer tractor with down pressure on the 3pt, Farmal had a few models that did back in the 60's, and they were death on most implements, the down pressure would break the top link masts , some builders would use them on post hole diggers, but that was about the only good thing about them..Like f.i.t stated a sled runner or a wheel mounted on the blade is your best bet.

Another one of the few Brands that has down pressure on 3pt besides a few of the models of the older Farmall's is Belarus

When we moved down here from NW Ohio, I put one car in the moving van and drove the other. The little neighbor girl was visiting, checking things out with our youngest daughter when the moving truck arrived. I was getting some things out of the back seat and she saw a snow scraper and asked what that was. I told her "Miss Ashley, you have led a charmed life!"

I wasn't bragging on or recommending purchasing a Belarus tractor just stating that they had down pressure on their 3pt hitches. :wink: :wink:

Didn't they do that because they used two dual action cylinders on an exterior rockshaft, rather than an internal rockshaft powered by a single acting cylinder?

By the way...been to Russia. "Belarus" doesn't come close to the sounds that come out of a drunken Belarussian.

Yes the Belarus tractors I've seen have n external double acting cylinder.

Do they still make Belarus tractors ? I haven't heard much about them for a while, just curious..they were one of the crudest made tractors I ever saw, the castings looked like they were chipped out of rock...

Last winter i only shoveled snow twice , supposed to be 48 here on friday. Maybe things will keep warming up . I have a feeling when i'm old and crusty we may not see any snow up here.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I can hookup the blade and plow snow. Hope we have a winter like last year as I only had to plow once.
