i have a 2001 chevy 2500 4*4 with a 6.0.my question is when i go to 4*4 low or high, the transfer case shifts but the hubs want lock in any ideas what the problem might be

Unless you have manual locking hubs they will always lock. It's part of being to lazy to get out to lock the hubs. I belive there is a company out there called DYNA TRAC that makes a kit to get rid of the auto hubs and put manuals on . It also removes the unit bearing and replaces them with tried and true taper roller bearings BUT NOT CHEAP!!!!! I think it was 1900 for the kit for FORD AND DODGE.

im not looing for manual locking hubs . when i go to 4*4 it want lock in is my problem.sorry if i exsplained it wrong

The 01 Chevies are IFS trucks and don't have locking hubs. I believe they may have an axle disconnect that is run by either vacuum or electric. Automatic and manual hubs will interchange. But again, this truck doesn't have locking hubs.

Dynatrac doesn't have a kit for the Chevy/GMC truck.

There are kits available to put a pull cable on the axle disconnect and eliminate the factory set-up, and it's much more reliable that way.

The way the axle disconnect works is there are two stub shafts on one side of the differential, with a splined collar that slides on and off one of the shafts. When it disconnects the shaft into the diff from the wheel, it allows the spider gears to spin free, which stops the driveshaft from turning. Not as efficient as locking hubs, but a lot more convenient.

Chevy/GMC has been running a disconnect since they went to the IFS 4x4s, and Dodge has been running the disconnect since 94. I think the Ford S/D went that way, also, in 06 or so, when they did away with the front leaf springs and went to the coil spring/radius arm set-up.

Are you saying "won't"? There is an electric motor in the front axle that compresses a spring that pushes a fork to slide a splined sleeve to lock the RH axle shaft to the shaft on the RH side of the FT diff. You can listen for the motor by turning the ignition on and engine off then have someone push the 4X4 button. You will be able to hear the motor if it's working.

Dodge has'nt had lockout hubs since 85 that I know of, I have them on an 86GMC never unlock them, 2000 Chev has ax Disconnect, no prob yet>

I beleive the part you are looking for is the TLA(thermal linear actuator). it mounts on the passenger side of the front differential. they are usually what goes wrong on a chevy.if you can jack both front wheel in the air keep pickup in park, and with the key on(helps if someone is there to lend a hand) poke the 4x4 button and listen to the tla if you think it engaged try to turn the wheels, they should turn until the differential locks in and then stop. if this doesnt happen then check for power to the tla with a test light if you have power replace the tla if you dont i cant remember if it gets signal from the t-case or the dash switch youll need to check that. good luck should be a easy fix.

For a GM the thermal actuator was YEARS out of production by 2001, superseded by a little gearmotor.

Dodge had locking hubs until 93. When they changed the body style in 94 they went to the disconnect. There are both automatic and manual locking hubs, too. I don't know how the automatic ones work, but they do.
