2010 throttle linkage

Hi,

I have an early-model (gas) 2010 to which I'm trying to revert some of the neglect and abuse that's been done over the years, but I've run into a bit of a snag while getting the throttle put back together. The first step in the service manual procedure for adjusting the speed (SM-2036/70-10-7) after backing out the stop screws is to "adjust the rear control rod until the governor control lever contacts the firewall", but the control rod is apparently just not long enough. Even with both ball joints backed off to just a single thread and the idle stop screw totally removed, the governor control level is still a good inch or so away from the firewall, with the throttle flush against the bracket.

I did note that the later models use a different part number for that rod (T18435 instead of T14106), and it's not unbelievable that a previous owner might have replaced the original with the wrong one. However i can't find any information about the dimensions of either part, so i have nothing to compare it to and no way to identify which one it is, or if that might even be the problem. The tube itself is the 'throttle pointing up' variety, so i presume that is still the original.

Has anyone else had this issue, or maybe have any tips or tricks about adjusting the engine speed, or perhaps knows how to identify which control rod is which? I'm hoping i can take up any remaining slack by adjusting the governor control rods themselves as needed, but it would be nice to know if there's some obvious thing i'm overlooking first.

Thanks

Lucky for me, mine seems to be in the right adjustment. But, someone welded a splice into one of the components. If you want, I can post some photos of the set up mine has.
