202 Gear shift removal

Single clutch MHF 202. Need to remove the gear shift. Does it come out through the top or does the cover need to come off?

Thanks. For now I am going to live with a vice-grip. Need to get some work done before the hottest part of summer hits.

Previous owners welded the shifter and it failed.
