20C Not Getting Fuel

I have a 20C Diesel that I inherited from my father. It was sitting for several years, but much to my surprise it fired up the first time I turned it over. Ive since serviced the hydraulic system and changed oil, fluids, etc. The first time that it ran for any extended period of time, it worked great for about 45 minutes and then started choking out and eventually stopped. Ive replaced the fuel filter and the manual fuel pump, but still cannot get it to start. Ive tried bleeding the air out of the fuel lines, but it seems like im Not getting a steady fuel supply at the fuel injector. Im now wondering if the fuel lines could be clogged with sludge. Any suggestions?

Did you change the fuel filters?

Sounds like some trash was in the fuel tank (probably algae) from the fuel sitting in the fuel tank. I just worked on a tractor with the same problem, got the diesel out of the fuel tank, removed the tank cleaned it out. Then started going though the fuel system, took the fuel filters off, blew air through them, and replaced all the filters.

Check that there is a good flow of fuel at every stage, work from the fuel tank toward the injector pump. On the British built 23C there is a small basket filter in the fuel pipe from the filter to the
injector pump, situated where the pipe is fitted to the injector pump. This is not mentioned / shown in either the parts manual or the workshop manual, so is very easy to overlook. I do not know it it was
also fitted to the 20C.

When I replaced the fuel tank on my 20C there was a screen filter inside the tank at the fuel shut off pitcock that was mostly clogged.

I replaced the Ferguson filters with a Parker Racor which is also a water seperator

The "SFA11 filter assembly with Delphi 496A screw on filter port size 1/2"-20 unf" setup works good also, I believe SSI Diesel still carries them.

There are two , little known and hard to obtain as replacements , flat, felt fuel filters at the rear of the injector pump . These usually look like a homeless person's underwear when finally revealed . :shock:

I've never seen anything like that in my forty plus years of pump repair on any CAV DPA pump here in the US. There is a safety inlet screen at the inlet, but there should be nothing in it IF the main filters are serviced correctly.

I just checked my 20C parts manual, and it only shows an inlet screen going into the injector pump.

They fit in a ' Chest ' at the rear of the CAV injector pump fitted to early TEF 20C Ferguson tractors . Not found on later tractors or the 23C engine [ from memory ]

That's because that pump is not here in the US, unless someone ships one here. There is a CAV inline four pump used on the Cockshutt Golden Eagle PD40 I see on occasion, but it does not use that part either. Standard 23C engines here use the CAV DPA rotary pump on both MF and AC applications.

That's strange, with the way are in there (in that picture) I don't see how they are supposed to filter fuel unless they covering inlet holes for the fuel. Never seen a setup like that.

I appreciate all of the tips. Ptfarmer nailed it...it was the wix fuel filter. The o ring was inside the filter blocking the fuel flow. Took a few attempts to get it positioned just right and then the air bled out of the fuel line. Thanks again!

Dieseltech that is probably the 1,000,000th time the sealing ring wound up blocking the inlets of the WIX/NAPA filter.
