my 2210 started smoking worse than normal while running, used to be it would smoke upon startup then clear up, now when it starts up it acts like it wont build rpms and its loading upwith fuel and smoking like a chimney, it will do that for about 30 seconds then to the normal rattling like a 2 cylinder does, im thinking injectors, i can shut it off while its been running for a while and it will do this everytime upon startup even after setting for just a few minutes. i can feather the trottle and it just smokes worse and still won build rpms any faster, my first thinking was head gasket not getting the compression it needs but now leaning towards injector, any opinions would be great, how do i tell if it is a injector thanks in advanced Ron

If it was me Ron I would start with running a compression check. If the Cylinders shows up with good Comp. then the Fuel Injectors would be next. IMO.

Why not check the easy stuff first, air, fuel, head gasket, and exhaust? Compression and injectors is a lot of work.

You check the HG indirectly by looking for the engine-oil going down while the cooant level increases, or v. v. Or drain the oil and look for coolant settling at the bottom. Or remove some coolant and either look for oil in it or take a sample to an engine shop that has a hydrocarbon sniffer. Coolant running at a higher than normal temp is also suggestive.

. . . also if there are bubbles in radiator, or hoses pressurized with coolant still cold, water in the oil, or oil in the water..

Best way to check a Head Gasket or Cracked or Warped head is to Run a compession Check. Period. Pressure up the Cylinder and watch for it to leak down. Esp for a Exhaust Leak,Crack or Gasket. Only takes a couple of Min. Plus your find out the condition of the Cylinders Comp. Esp when it's in good working order. If your getting water Coolant in the Oil that will pretty much tell you it's bad. Water in the oil and the problem of Blk.Smoke out the Exhaust Doesn't apply.

That sure makes a lot of sense. He, no doubt, has a diesel compression gauge handy and already has an injector out.

A Buddy asked if he could borrow mine the other day. Instead of having to drive 35 miles I told what to do. Just go to Advanced Auto. NAPA and Rent one. He called me back and thanked me. His AutoZone had one. A 10min. Dr. and just had to leave a 20.00$ deposit that was refundable.

. . . . and you recommend doing that before doing the previously mentioned checks? He still has to remove both injectors and test each cylinder, one at a time.

ir filter or Fuel Maybe.
I didn't want to belittle the Man. As you often try to do. I was guessing he Searched for and checked the Easy,Normal Usual problems First before even posting on here. My Bad. When I bought my 2000 Used as is and wanted to Know what condition my Cylinders was in. Nver Done a Yanmar diesel before. Took me a whole30 Min. Just how long doesit take you. Sounds as if it's more than you can handle. Old Man <E></E>

<E></E> Couldn't help it. Like I have any room to talk. Sad but true your probly in better shape than I am. <E></E>

thanks for the help, i tried all the easy stuff that i could think of, so far no coolant in the oil that i can see, the oil level isnt changing at all, im not getting bubbles in the radiator, the air filter looks fine, i run it without for a few seconds to make sure, i guess i will be making a trip into advanaced or auto zone to rent a compression tester and check each cylinder thanks Ron

Certainly not saying your compression is ok but if these machines will crank up pretty easy the compression is normally pretty good. The ones that won't crank right up are normally the ones with low compression. It does sound like pulling the injectors and checking may make sense. Here is an article about that. <LINK_TEXT text="http://www.hoyetra...port/knowledgebase.php?article=43</LINK_TEXT> Are you confident your fuel supply and fuel filter is clean and no water?
