2240 lights

I would like to put lights on my 2240. I am talking about all the lights including the rear work light and the taillights, even the indicator lights for the alternator etc.
When I bought the tractor all the lights had been removed for some reason and all the indicator lights had been unhooked as had the fuel gauge. The only thing that works is the tach, but the hour meter doesn't register hours and is showing 1392. I would like to get all that stuff fixed. Of course, I would like to do it as cheaply as possible. I have looked online, but there are so many clamps.brackets, lights etc. to choose from I really don't know what is what and what I need to do. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Check with a salvage yard for lights, brackets, lamps, etc. 1/2 price. You don't say where you are, there are several yards in Iowa.

Unfortunately for Zhaque, I am going to disagree on the free to download parts and service manuals. I have not been able to find free downloads of the parts catalog or the technical (service) manual for the 2240s. Operator's manual, yes.

At the John Deere Ag & Turf Bookstore:

The Operator's Manual is free to download. Or hard copies can be purchased.

The Parts Catalog is a purchase item in all forms at the bookstore. It is free to use online at JDparts.

The Technical Manual is not a free download. It is a purchase item, in all forms, electronic and hard copy. The correct TM will be needed as it contains the wiring schematics.

There is an early and a late 2240, I seem to remember this coming up in Zhaque' previous thread and don't remember which his is. There is a serial number split. 0-349999 uses different manuals (all three) than 350000 and after. The earlier serial numbers had the battery box cover in front of the dash, like the 2020, 2030s and the later serial numbers, there was no top center battery box door, the cowl side panels split in the center, in front of the dash panel. The dash panels were different as well. Those are quick visual differences in the two.

As I remember the discussions around this tractor not starting, the information was that the previous owner(s) had done major disruption to all the wiring. The technical manual will be required if one wants to restore the wiring as original. Purchasing the correct harnesses and switches will want to be checked out.

I took a few minutes over coffee, and in one of your other threads I found you replied to Tx Jim that your 2240 matched the first diagram he posted, which was the early 2240 (0-349999 serial number range).

Here is a link to the online Parts catalog PC4151 for it. 2240 PC4151

Do an Equipment Publications search at the JD Ag & Turf bookstore link that Tx Jim gave you. Just enter 2240 in the model search box and search. You will get a list with the 2240, Tractors, Base Units, 0-349999 (serial number range) as one of the options. Click the down arrow at the left of the title to see the manuals. If you click on arrow beside OML31364 for the Operator's manual, it will open and give you the icons, to view online or download, at the far right of that box. Click the download icon and it will download a pdf copy to your computer/device that you can save and print from if you choose. You will see purchase prices below that if you want to purchase a paper copy or CD.

If you click on the Technical Manual (TM4301) the same way you will see a list of the purchase option media formats; Book, CD, and Download, along with a price for each. The download is not free. The same applies if you wanted a copy of the Parts catalog of your own, rather than using the free online one.

This same info and sources apply to your other John Deere equipment.

If you do not want to purchase there you can use the John Deere Publication Numbers to be sure you are getting the right manuals elsewhere as you look for used OEM manuals, reprints of the manuals, or downloads. Be careful of reprints and downloads, especially inexpensive ones. People have reported poor quality and/or missing information in some cases

The parts manual is not free. I bought an operators' manual from Jensales which seems to give all the basic info. I have access to a dealer about 10 miles away, but the parts I'd need from a dealer would be way too expensive. I have a tech manual with wiring diagram, but I know if I need harnesses, we're talking over a thousand bucks easy.

Along with info related to the JD Ag & Turf Bookstore (Tx Jim gave you the link to it) and the manuals there, in my post this morning (post # 6) I gave you a link to the online parts catalog (PC4151 for your early 2240) on jdparts.com which is free to use. You cannot download and save it however you can use it and print pages from it at no cost to you and they update many of the parts catalog as part numbers are superseded. That way you can get the john Deere part numbers for your tractor to use in your searches. Here it is again.

You can use the wiring diagrams in TM4301 to make your own harnesses, that is why I recommended having the TM in the past.

Yes, parts from the dealer, or any source, can be expensive. With the JD part numbers from the parts catalog, it is easy to use them to search for used or aftermarket parts at places like PartsASAP, YT's parent company, who has salvage yards and sells used and aftermarket parts. The part number gives you a way to check fitment besides just the tractor model. In the case of your 2240 you will need to watch it as not everything on the late models may be the same, but the description of both is 2240. It doesn't hurt to check some prices with the dealer. I have found they are competitive on some things, especially if the parts are ordered on a stock order so there is no shipping charge. Shopping wisely is always best.

Good luck with your project.

Might just look at junkyards for whole panels with dash lights and all, then just swap out the panels save all the wiring work and time. As for the lights I would just get some of the LED lights for that and have real lights that you can see well with and nobody will care for the difference when they see the better lights . No they will not look like the originals. But then if you up graded to newer dealer lights you would own the dealer ship for what those would cost and would not look like the originals either .

I had a 2240 and the hour meter didn't work. I took it apart and saw some plastic teeth missing on the gear. I built it up with epoxy and with a saw file I shaped the teeth. Turned the hours back to zero and put it back together. Worked perfect until the day I sold it. And before anyone yells at me for turning hours back,,,it's my tractor and I can do whatever I want with it. And when I sold it I told the guy,,,,those are not original hours I turned it to zero when I fixed the gear,,,,

Liked the reply "It's my tractor and I'll do whatever I want to with it." At least you told the guy you sold it to what you did.
