2290 PTO issue

Friends got a 2290 here, PTO works great
in 1000, but flipped around in 540 the
shaft will barely turn and you can stop
the shaft from turning with two fingers.

He hit a rock with a brush hog in 540 and
that was it.

I'd like to know what I'm going to be
getting into before I pull the housing.

Sounds like something is wrong with the shifting collar or its movement that slides back and forth from the 1000 gear to the 540 gear. Could even be a very weak shift spring as that has occurred on occasion. Regardless of the exact problem to repair anything in this area the PTO unit needs to be removed and dismantled for inspection. Not a bad project to do, the factory service manual has a great step by step procedure explaining what to do, Rod.

Turns out to be the typical sheared key.
That key is much thinner than I ever imagined.
