My mower engine quit while I was mowing yesterday.it will run on one cylinder with the spark plug removed from the other side.I’m thinking an exhaust valve not opening and the compression choking down the engine?I didn’t take it apart yet to diagnose the problem yet.any experience with this?kubota zg23 mower 23 hp Koehler gas engine

I have a CV22 Kohler apart in my shop for the same symptoms. This one has a chunk gone from the exhaust valve. I've also seen the valve seats come out of the head on some of these engines too

I would remove the rocker cover on the cylinder you have removed the sparkplug. See if the intake valve is stuck open. I've seen plenty of stuck valves on the kohler engine. This occurs from an overheated cylinder, usually caused by a rodent.

J Hamilton,
I have a 20 hp 20 year old kohler in my terramite.
I'm not using it like I used to and Larry keeps saying he coming to pick it up.

I noticed it would only fire off on one cylinder then start hitting on both.
I gave it a snort of fogging oil in the left cylinder. After about 8 cranks, the left cylinder started firing, then the white smoke rolled.
I think the exhaust valve is sticking open. The shot of fogging oil may have got to the exhaust valve stem.
So far it has been firing off on both cylinders.
This past fall I had the #4 exhaust valve stick open on my retired Jubilee. I did the same thing, Shot of oil in #4 and the valve broke loose.

Update:pulled the valve cover, the rocker hold down bolt had backed out but the threads on the bolt look ok.funny thing is the fuel pump is mounted to the valve cover and the actuator arm is run by the rocker going up and down.that arm was holding the rocker in place
