231 Hydraulics

Lazybyrd

New User
I have a 231 I bought last year about this time. It has about
6500 hours on it. All worked fine when I purchased it but the
hydraulics started a chatter about 2 months ago. Yesterday
the lift arms would only raise if I put the selector in constant
pump. I changed the fluid and cleaned the screen. Still only
raise in constant pump. Same results with the draft selector in
all positions and all engine speeds. Implement is a 6’ box scraper. I just ordered a service manual in hopes of a trouble
shooting section. I would appreciate any suggestions.

In my experience with these, you think you are cleaning the fine screen type filters but that is not so. I learned the hard way on a Massey Ferguson 250. Those filters are not very expensive but you will have re drain the hydraulic oil. I have never had the filter out of a 231, so I am assuming it is alike or similar to 250, 253 and 240. Those are the models I have the most experience with. I think I have seen where a failed standpipe o ring can cause a similar problem. That requires removal of the lift cover. Hope this is of some help.

Lazybyrd, I just looked at the strainer/filter that is used on the 231 and it is the same as used on the 135, 165 etc. It appears the be the type that would clean easily. The 250,253 etc filter/strainers have more/finer layers of filtering material to trap foreign matter and will not wash out. You may have a problem other than the pump's inability to suck in enough hyd oil. I would say that you probably got that strainer clean.

I am confident I did. It was pretty straight forward.
After I receive the service manual I will tear into it.
I appreciate your follow through.

An update:
I pulled the pump and disassembled. Everything looked good except 1 washed out valve in the pump. The seat was good. Probably damaged by water in the hydraulic system. Parts on order. I am hoping this will remedy.
More later.
Thanks
