239 diesel motor availability?

I have had some calls regarding 239 diesel motors as I had advertised a 2520 that was repowered and it was a perfect match.I know there were many different applications and there are some newer tractors that use that engine.Question what did they come in and are they all the same.I have been told power units,6000 sprayers, and 6200 tractors but don't know much about them.

Actually any Dubuque,Mannheim or Saran 4 cylinder(300 series) engine will fit a tractor. 2520 came from factory with a 219 CID diesel engine. I think some power unit engines don't have strong enough blocks for some tractor applications. A lot of the newer models have 276 cid(4.5L) engines

Trash pumps, air compressors, gen sets etc all use the 239"s. Government Liquidation (www.Govliquidation.com)
had about 20
complete engines for sale for last month

The 239, AKA 3.9 liter in power units has a "light block" and is not suitable for use in a 2520. The 2520 uses the engine block as an integral part of the frame and support for the front end. So it requires a "heavy block" 239. 219s and 239s are common in 450 crawlers. Many Dubuque 20-30-40 series ag tractors have something close. I also think some heavy block 4039s were used in later machines.

Larry, Tractors require structural blocks. Many power units use non structural blocks. The 239 engines can be either. The structural blocks are much heavier/stronger. They are obviously different in appearance when looking at the side of the block crankcase shape. The structural block will look like the original 219, smooth on the side with an addition of a slight dimple/bulge where each rod would require clearance on the inside. The "Non structural" block side has large crowned bulges over each rod location area for rod to swing inside of crankcase, on side of block. Hope this helps. DW

The 219 I got out of a utility tractor to switch my 2520 over to diesel is as you describe- quite smooth sided. I originally got the idea of switching engines after looking at my cousins 2555. I believe that was a 239, which is what I wanted for my 2520, but 219 is what was easily available. I recall the 239 in the 2555 being like your second description- obvious faceted angles on the side of the block. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. Now I've got to make a point of checking out his tractor!

I wonder if the government surplus is charging the core charge engine dealers are as mandated by the EPA ?

Better buy up any new engines you can find as it is going to keep getting harder and harder to get them due to all the changing laws.

That is nice to know as I have been told there is a difference but never knew how to tell.I was also told some industrial engines did not have balencer shafts, is there any truth to that?

When John Deere first introduced the new 210C wheel-loader-backhoe they left the balancing shafts out of the engine as a cost-cutting idea. We sold many. All had a low to mid RPM vibration problem that tended to crack mufflers. Later on, Deere put the twin shafts back in. I don't know if they tried leaving them out in other machines.
