2390 having reverse problems

I am looking at a Case 2390 with 4,001 hrs on it. The guy wants $3,500.00 (Im guessing is a good price). The problem is when you put it in reverse it starts to back up maybe 3 inches and then quites. It cranks and runs great lift and pto works and driving it, it shifts all the gears fine. Everything works on the tractor except the reverse. What's causing this? Is it a powershift problem or a valve problem or what? I want it as a tillage tractor but I am a little scared of its problem and the price.

If you dont get an answer wait and repost and ask for Mel, Agriking or Rod1370 they should have the answer.

P.S. My guess; [thats what it is, a guess] would be a stuck valve.

If the tractor has good tires and a decent cab it might be worth gambling at $3500

Derek more info about the problem is needed. Does the engine pull down when put in rev? Is there any difference at idle or full throttle? Does the engine surge when clutch is depressed? Do the hyd's slow down in rev? Does the trans press stay the same in rev. as 1, 2, or 3? Warm or cold oil change anything? Are any noises noticeable when in rev? Rod.

1370rod. I talked to the owner and asked him the questions that you needed further info on. The engine does not pull down when put in reverse. There is no difference in idle or full throttle. The engine does not surge when the clutch is pressed. Hes not sure about the hydraulics when put in reverse but says you can still steer it fine. He doesn't know about the transmission pressure being the same in rev as 1,2 or 3. Warm or cold oil doesn't affect it. There are no noticeable noises in reverse. He said When you press the clutch and put it in reverse it will back up 6" to a foot and just stop backing up. But rpms stay the same and no noises. He said forward shifting it shifts good and has a slight hard shift to it going through the gears but no grinding or anything and the shifts are spot on.

Derek, if you are familiar with CASE P Shift tractors you know the engine grunts or surges when the clutch is depressed. If this tractor does not do that it means something is wrong with C-4 of the P.Shift. either hyd. or mechanical. When the Clutch is depressed or the lever in Rev. there should be 180-200 psi at the C-4 port plug on the P Shift control valve cover. If you have a way of testing that it would be helpful. If it does there is some kind of damage the the clutch pack and the tractor needs to be split. If it does not have pressure its very likely the tractor will need to be split also but there would be one thing to check first. Rod.
