2390 starter/electrical trouble

I needed to replace the starter on my 2390. Took the old one to a alternator/starter shop. They said the cost to repair the old one would exceed the cost of a rebuilt unit so I purchased a new starter. I got the new one all hooked up and there was no power to any of the wiring on the tractor. This seemed really odd so I swapped starters with my 2290 as they are obviously identical. The 2290 starter had no problems, all electrical items (fan, radio, lights) worked properly and the tractor started right up and ran fine. Just to test, I put the new starter in the 2290 and again in that tractor there was no power at any wires. I ended up hooking my test light up directly to the battery and found the entire frame of the tractor was powered. I found power to the oil pan, engine block, loader brackets, etc. I removed the starter and bench tested it, everything checked out OK. Is there something specific I should look at before I return the starter? It's a Delco 40mt rebuilt by Wilson. I'm out of ideas, any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone.

The starter on my 2590 has two large posts on it (IIRC?). One of them hooks directly to the negative battery post. The other has a short heavy wire that goes to the solenoid, and then the other post on the solenoid goes to the battery positive.

I wonder if somebody wired the short conductor that goes from the solenoid to the starter to the wrong post on the starter? However, this does not explain why the tractor is live!

The batteries ground path is broken , that's why the chassis is showing + potential. Since you have eliminated the problem on one tractor and duplicating it on another by swapping starters, I guess you have it narrowed down, take the starter back and have it replaced or repaired.

I'm not sure exaclty what to tell you your problem is, but a 40 mt starter is usually an isolated ground starter. I am just wondering outloud if there was a cable left on the old starter that was needed and is now gone. Or maybe they remove the insulators from the ground stud for that particular application. Either way take the starter back and explain the situation to them and they will probably have an answer. hth , jstpa
