2394 shift under a load

I need help with family argument. We are
a cattle farm so excuse the ignorance
about tillage. My son is using my 2394 on
a 20 ft Deere's single fold disc. He is
using it to cut the sod on some worn out
terraces so he can use his old grader to
flatten the terraces. He is using 3rd
gear 2nd powershift to disc 5 mph. Drops
about 70 rpms when he drops the disc. I
told him he should use 2nd gear and all 6
power shifts. He thinks that would be
harder on the transmission. Tell me who
is right?

Assuming the depth or cut the implement making is not changed in this case you are pulling the same load so essentially the wear on the transmission is the same. In fact in a very minimal way each shift or clutch pack application causes wear of the linings, so more shifts would actually equal more wear. There is my 2 cents we will see what others say. In a wider application in general terms as equipment became larger a more power was available equipment was also pulled at a faster speed. Less reduction in gearing or not needing a lower or slower gear, instead using a gear to move fast reduces the torque or twisting pressure against the final drive components after the transmission. That equals less wear because of less pressure on wear surfaces.

There is no advantage to ne gear over the other as long as the engine can handle the load. A disc that small should be no problem in 3rd gear and any powershift gear. He can save fuel by shifting up and throttling back some too.

If you run in 6th PS the power is going straight through all the parts without running through the planetary gears causing less wear on them. The main thing to remember when pulling hard with the 6 speed PS is to try not to use the odd gears. This runs the power through the planetary set that is exclusive to the 6 speed PS. Used parts are harder to find, and many guys say that is the weakest set.
