240 rear axels

Are there any other axels that will fit a farmall 240 besides the 240? Are the 240 utility rear axels the same other than the hubs? thanks.

Per my IH parts book the axles for the Farmall 240 w/ 80 inch axles are different between the Farmall and International tractors, Part No. 370312R1 for the Farmall and 369392R1 for the International. The Carrier is the same between both tractors, 351111R31 for the left side and 351112R31 for the right side. On the Farmall w/88 inch axle the axle part no. is 369393R1 and on the 100 inch axle the part no. is 370658R1. Hope this helps.

The Farmall 404 replaced the Farmall 240 and was produced for a few years after the Farmall 240 until around mid-1960's. In checking the CaseIH website parts diagrams for rear axles on the 404 the 88" and 100" axles were the same part no. revised to a R2 suffix indicating a small change but useable where as the R1 was used on the 240. For some reason the 80" axles were different between the same models with different basic part numbers.
From looking at the Super C part catalog TC-44B it shows a different retention method for securing the SC axle within the carrier and to the bull gear while in the Farmall 240 parts catalog TC-53B a 358236R1 snap ring is also used for retention. Not knowing the actual physical differences between a very common SC 80" axle and the 240 80" axle there might be sufficient room where the snap ring groove could be machined in the splined end of the axle to accommodate the snap ring or the splines lengthened somewhat to permit the snap ring groove. Also, in the TC-53B Farmall 240 parts catalog there is a note if ordering a service replacement axle that the snap ring also needs to be obtained for use. I don't know any other reason they could be different and maybe someone with actual working knowledge of both models could provide additional information. It's my belief with some creative engineering and a small amount of machine work a Super C 80" axle could be reworked to fit on your Farmall 240, Hal.
