240 Utility serial number question

I'm getting conflicting information on my 240 Utility serial number. The number on mine is 1777. In some places, that indicates it was the first production tractor in '59. in other places it appears to be a mid year for '58. Just how were these bloody things numbered? Do I have a '58 or the first '59?

They started building that model in June 1958. Yours was built in August 1958. SuperAV Jr B was on the right track but looked up the Farmall 240 rather than International 240 Utility.

IH made two different versions of the 240, the FARMALL, and the UTILITY, each with its own serial number range starting at 501. There is a 1777 Utility (yours) and a 1777 Farmall out there somewhere.

I'm just jealous you can read yours. Mine seems to be fully worn off, though now I see where it's stamped, maybe I'll get lucky and find enough of a trace.

You missed a digit in your serial number. It looks like it might be 2307

I think Jim is onto something. After I downloaded the picture, I magnified it and you can faintly see a 7 behind the 230. Those guys stamping the numbers didn`t use equal force, I imagine.

So yeah, looking in the right spot on the tag in fact revealed my serial number! Here I thought it was lost to history. 10522, so a 1961 model. I know it wasn't the intention of your post, but it helped me quite a bit!
