Hey, I have a IH 2404. I am having a problem with the tractor now that it has gotten cold, I live in Michigan. When the temp. gets below freezing something in the right side of the rear end locks up. It almost seems to be the right brake, but I don't know why it would lock up due to cold temps. I wonder if it could be water in the oil? If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks

Could be water, but those brakes will lock up sometime after getting dirty or worn or weak springs.

My 2404 had the same problem until I reworked the brakes. Weak springs or rust and water may have the ramps fouled keeping the discs from releasing. Are the springs that return the brake pedal weak allowing the brakes to drag. I had all of those problems at one time or other.

Thanks for the replies, I have to wonder though, why the cold temps would cause the brakes to lock? I never have the problem when its not freezing. I'll have to see about going through the brakes.

Weather changes effect metals in funny ways. It is simple to pull the brake drums and check them out. I have them lock up on mine all the time when dirty or rusted up a bit. Backing up will unlock them most the time.

DAMPNESS.....I have two tractors the G R A B when you apply the brakes. Yes the weather plays a role. I found when I cleaned them, replaced the springs etc. and used a little anti-sieze on the linkage. It works right!
