2440 cranking slow

Dubuque buildt,with delco starter is cranking hard.It has two new batteries and new heavy duty cables and even with a jumper it wont spin fast enough to start. So all that is left to check is the starter.Right? Is there something else to check before removing starter? How would I check out the starter? What would be better,having my starter rebuilt or just buy a rebuilt from Deere? I dont use this old tractor much,mostly just for feeding hay at one pasture so it needs to start even when its cold in s.e. Texas. Thanks

Have you load tested those new batteries? What is the amp draw and voltage at the starter when cranking?

Run another chassis return cable from the
batteries's common (-) point. Down to on of the
starter mounting bolts.
The (-) connection to the sheet metal isn't worth
the time of day.

Try turning the steering wheel while you are cranking it. You may have an internal hydraulic leak that is loading the pump making it hard to spin. If the tractor spins over fast enough to start,you can try and trace down the leak,or install a manual de-stroke valve on the hydraulic pump

While trying to crank engine turn steering wheel rapidly from side to side. If this helps engine spin over faster then you need to install & use a hyd de-stroking screw.

try this place for starter...have one on a 2840 works good...does your front pump have a pump unloader on it...it is on left side (if sitting in seat) and has a little tee screw if your pump has it..

I tried turning steering wheel.Nothing.I will try rerouting the ground.This tractor is rusty as it is 35 years old and seldom sees a barn.I replaced the positive cable because the flat end was rusty and was sparking,but no improvement.I will need to see about load testing the batteries.I asume TSC charged them fully.Thanks for the answers.

Like B&D said run the end of the neg. cable to CAST not the tin on the firewall like original. I don't like the steering wheel technique, I lower the rockshaft then place the handle in raise while cranking. (poor mans destroker)

I'll third relocating ground cable from rusty battery box to engine block. I curios how 3pt raising would be better on starter than moving steering wheel from side to side. De-stroking screw only cost about $15

The others have pretty much covered it. The only other thing I can think of is to check your battery cables with an ohn meter. They can corrode behind the insulation where it can"t be seen creating excessive resistance.
