2440 engine turning tool

Hi,
I need an engine turning tool (barring tool) for my 1978 John Deere 2440. The access hole in the flywheel housing is square, or diamond-shaped, and won't accept anything larger than about 3/4 inch diameter, so the Cummings tool is too large. I tried to order one from Greenparts, but the engine serial # I gave them won't register in their computer. Does anyone know the part number for the correct Serviceguard tool that I need for this tractor?

Here is a tool I made to turn over a 8.3 Cummins. It fits over the front damper bolts so the engine can be inched over with a breaker bar. I don't know if your Deere has three or four bolts like this in the damper or not. And if so I don't know if there is room up there to get in there with a tool but this is an idea anyway.

That info should be in the Engine section of your service manual, on the page that lists the special engine tools recommended. I looked at my 2030 manual (has the 4-219 engine) and it says JD-281 for a Dubuque built tractor and JDE-83 for a Mannheim built unit.

Pop the round clutch inspection cover off and you should be able to bar it over through that hole, I have done that before.

Hum ? I worked on a few of those Deere utility's and got by with a screw driver or small pry bar in that hole.

The John Deere number for that tool is indeed, JD281A. It costs $219 plus shipping, so a large screwdriver may be in my future--a metal one
and one with orange juice!

And now you know why most of us turn them with screwdrivers and such. Turning tool fits a few, screwdriver or bar fits many; for a lot less money.
