we have 2 24t balers one we have always used the poly twine and the other we have always used the cisal twine I ran out of the cisal twine so i switched to the poly twine out of the other baler and it wont tie knots all the way and then i got to tie one knot and the other was loose i baled close to 250 bales and worked fine with the cisal twine but when i switched i can get to work what am I doing wrong? i am dont like square baling i am used to my 535 round baler thanks ahead of time

oh I agree my brother in law said his grandpa tried poly years ago like 20 and it wouldnt work then he bought the baler brand new and we still use it now

The knotters have worn over time and won't work well with the poly twine. Cheaper to buy good sisal twine than to try and make it work with poly. I was on a service call last week where the problem was low quality sisal twine with thin spots in it. We finally switched to better twine and it never missed a bale after that.

The one having trouble probably does not have the multi twine billhooks. Regular billhooks do not tie well with poly twine because it is smaller diameter and the tongue will not hold while knotting.

I think "40 year old" is on the conservative side for a 24T, isn't it? Was thinking they were from the 60s or earlier.

The 24T was introduced in 1962. I dont have an end date, but I would guess it was 1971 because thats when the "6" balers came out.

Even thou it's old it is the same design knotter as the new balers, one of the most over looked problems is a dull knife on the wiper arm, it would be a good start to switch it over to the new style arm with the replaceable knife, you can make it work with the plastic twine with a little fine tuning..the plastic cuts a bit harder and is a bit slipperier, but more constant in size and strength, I prefer it over sisal..

Would you believe there are two types of bill hooks one for the plastic stuff and one for the sisal twine. Found that out back when I still used a 14T

Yes there are two different bill hooks the difference is in the tongue of the hook, the correct one will enhance the performance, all part of the "tune up". There is very little actual difference in knotter design for the past 35 years, they just made some nice changes in adjusting points and replacement components, there is room for a lot of improvements but I doubt there are any in the plans...

Baled many a bale from a 14T over the years but now use a New Holland which by far is a lot simpler to work on and time then the old JD balers. I had the main drive chain brake on this NH271 and was back up and baling in less then an hour but if it had been the old 14T it would have taken half the day to fix

well thanks i just ended up buying some cisal twine and solved the problem for the most part it still misses a few once in a while well more than the other baler but we got it baled and got more in the next few days i wont have to bale any squares for a couple of years now

I must be lucky. I was given a 14T a few years ago, and it still had sisal in it (about thirty years old, too) and I used it until it ran out. Then I tried poly, and it worked OK but tried to cut when you handled the bales. Then, I went to the 7200 poly and haven't had any trouble doing it. Must just be lucky---
