2504 shift pattern??

That “shift on the fly” could just be some slippery but true terminology to describe the operation of the TA if so equipped. But the actual 5 gears are definitely not intended to be shift on the fly. Tractordata also say a 5 speed shuttle is also available, I have no clue what shifting would be like on that, my guess would be a manual shuttle reverser that requires clutching to change directions. Can’t hardly be a shift on the fly reverser without a torque converter. I also see on Tractordata that the 5 speed shuttle provides 19.5 mph in reverse, no thank you!

If you've got the tractor there and it runs, it would take you about 30 seconds to figure out the shift pattern, but here it is.

The D-TA is for the torque amplifier, a separate lever located on the left side above the clutch pedal. Your 2504 could have a reverser there instead. The TA lever will have a steel pistol grip and a squeeze trigger to release it. The reverser will be a simple rod with a plastic ball on top, assuming the ball has not been smashed and lost. Only the TA is "shift on the fly." Everything else is non-synchronized. Unless you are a master of driving cars from the 1920's and 1930's you will need to come to a complete stop to shift gears.

The guy i got the tractor from said 5 speed shift on the fly but it's not. It's just a 5 speed shuttle shift. I'm going with this shift pattern. There is no TA pistol grip handle, just the forward and reverser handle

That's a sticker from the 1939-1954 era of IH tractors, such as the Farmall H, but the shift pattern is the same because the 2504 is a multi-generation evolution of the original H design.

Your tractor should have a metal tag similar to the one pictured (without the D-TA part) riveted to the dashboard.

If the tractor has a forward-reverse option, the original metal tag was probably similar to the one above, but with the "D" and "TA" replaced with "F" and "R" or other similar appropriate markings.

The metal tag was on the battery box cover, which is the next panel below everything in your pictures. Your whole cover, and whole battery box is probably missing.

Stuff like that has a tendency to disappear, along with the serial tag. I'm just saying it's "supposed" to be there, somewhere.
