2510 John Deere questions

Friend is looking to replace his 2020 with a 2510.

not knowing much about Deeres i've kinda heard that the 10 series tractors weren't that great especially the 3010s???? on Tractor Data it looks like the 2510 is a 3020 with a 2020 engine (why didn't they use the 2520 number then ?? too confusing).

were those good tractors? anything to watch for?

he was also going to look at a 3010 gas with a loader and supposedly a 4020 wide front installed but may bail on that one.

2510 although similar to 3020, 2510 has a different 4 piston hyd front pump & has a different clutch housing. Frt axle parts on 3010 & 4020 are identical. One example is the knee(see photo below) which is part prone to failure.

stopped and looked at the 2510 over lunch but did not drive as they were out

looks decent. was probably repainted at some point probably an older restoration that wasn't used for parades.
has JD 148 loader (not repainted) with good bucket with a bale spike too (no that's not worth too much)

serial number looks like 1967

looks like brand new carb. good GoodYear tires with minor road wear and no cracking, good rear rims and front tires. seat and dash and all are in good shape and complete.

has the synchro shift transmission which i know nothing about. we'll have to see if we can find a video on shifting one.

i suspect its an estate tractor on consignment. they are asking $8500

are the 30xx tractors (rear end) a good unit?? any issues with the synchro transmission?? (again we know very little about Deeres)

Dad bought the first 2510 in the area for the spring of 1966. They were produced for 1966-1968. The 2520 replaced the 2510 for 1969 when the side console was introduced. All great tractors. I'd have a 2510/2520 over a 3010/3020 any day. There are engines all over the place which will fit right in 2510/2520. Not so with the orphaned 3010/3020. I have a 2520 which was retired from field work for the spring of 2022. I'll be selling it next year, as it just sits.

I bought a 3010 diesel in 1977. It turned 10000 hours last year. It has carried a loader most of the time I have had it. Gear combinations/selection in transmission is good for loader work. Engine and synchros in transmission were rebuilt once each. I call it Old Reliable, and I am an IH man.

We have 2510 gas PS it is my go to tractor, we have used it for 50 years it starts all winter, have to let it warm up the oil awhile . I use it to cut allof my hay 'rake everything. I love the power shift it is a bit slow to shift because it is only 50 hp. I always wanted a newer PS tractor but never got one.

There is a lot to love about those little tractors using them wise. Parts you can pretty much plan on needing to be 2510 specific or even more similar engine wise to the later utilities. It’s just a different unit everything’s a bit smaller not worse just different I wish I had the one I sold.

when looking it over a bit more, if it stops raining. what should we look for on the synchro-shift transmission? I presume run it thru all the gears. anything else? I'll have to watch a yooutubee video on how to operate one.
