2550 charge pump/internal leak ?

Guys need some help. Got a 2550 that seems to be starving the main hydraulic pump. I?m not a big fan of the little German tractors myself, but we?ve had this one several years and it?s been good for what it was good for. I don?t have a book yet and was looking for pointers on the famous internal leaks that those tractors were prone to. The front pump has less than 100 hrs on it. Long story on that and it ended up an engine rebuild when the little chip off the crankshaft pulley went through the timing gears. Last fall it started this cavitation thing and I?m wanting to get to the bottom of it before we start pulling the twin rake with it again. It always had plenty of flow and stayed cool enough to do the job. At the end of the season last year we ended up using a different tractor because the hydraulic temp was running higher than I was comfortable with. If it was a row crop tractor I would say that the transmission pump is weak and isn?t supplying enough oil to run any through the oil cooler. So I?m open to ideas. Also this tractor does not have a hi/lo

To hear some discussions there wasn't a Mannhiem built JD that didn't suffer some hydraulic catastrophe. I am here to say otherwise. One of the most common issues is a high pressure leak to sump and of those a leaking rockshaft valve is often the case. Rockshaft valve problems can be seen by looking in through the oil filler towards the top/front of the rockshaft housing to see if there is any oil running or spraying. Next in line would be an SCV issue that can be observed by the valve body getting hot after a half hour minimum run time. If you have access to some gauges and fittings we can fine tune the diagnosis somewhat

I?ve got plenty of gauges and fittings to tap into Waterloo tractors. I will check. For spray in through the filler port. Is there a way to check charge pump function on those little turds? On a quad range or synchro, I have took filter out and watched it fill a bucket. Also the sump screen has been removed and it is clean.

Although not 100% accurate you can remove hyd filter cover with 5 gal bucket underneath then operate engine for 15 seconds & measure amount of oil in the bucket to get an idea of trans pump GPM.

Along with possible faulty/leaking rockshaft control valve seals that Tech 7 referred to another place to check for leak is if tractor has the old style steering IE not hydrostatic steering for blown o-rings by capping supply line to PS.

Does tractor have a frt end loader? If so what type valve controls FEL?

Does tractor have IPTO IE hyd controlled or dual stage clutch?
