2640 injection pump #2

I have been going to ask this for a while and since there was another 2640 pump question, I might as well ask mine. The motor has been replaced and the pump is an electric solenoid on off type. When I tried the key off the engine wants to keep running. Pull the throttle wide open and then close it quickly and the engine stops. What kind of fun is in my future?

Interesting, you post about 25 minutes later and you get no response. The other guy gets replies from 2 pump rebuilders, such is how it goes. I on the other hand am no expert but have some knowledge. I believe the symptom you are giving is also the early signs of a Roosamaster pump that your tractor has will soon need a rebuild. Most of my experience came from those pumps being used on the GM Oldsmobile V8 diesels and the early 6.2 and 6.5 GM light truck engines. When they did that it was time for a pump rebuild. In that case they do use a different type governor which only limits top RPM as compared to a tractor. Since Dieseltech posted both his email and phone in the other reply I would suggest you just contact him directly if no one else chimes in with a reply.

I think.it is the solenoid itself or the solenoid spring that needs adjustment. Easily doable on a (clean) tractor.

It's possible there's some rust on the governor linkage under the pump cover, or on the solenoid plunger.

Also, if the governor damper ring fails and the drive pins but against the slots making metal filings the fine filings can get attracted to the magnetized parts of the solenoid and cause it to stick.

It's not hard to take the cover (which includes the solenoid) off and have a look at what's going on, but one needs to be careful when putting it back on so the lever on the solenoid doesn't jam the metering valve linkage which could result in a ''runaway''/no shutdown condition.

I sometimes energize the solenoid with test leads connected to a battery so the lever is pulled away from the linkage tab making installation of the cover easier.
