274 Massey 4wd

I bought this 274 about 4 months ago. It has a loader on it. The transmission sounds noisy in 3rd gear when decelerating or going down hill holding back. It does this in the forward range as well as reverse range, but only in 3rd, posiibly a little in 4th. It sounds kind of like a chatter sound. Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

Possibly a load carrying bearing in close proximity, relating to the gear in quesion.
I'd check the hydraulic filter for "bits", and drop the oil as well. I believe the tractor should have magnetic plugs fitted, so remove each of the four, and check here for "bits" as well. This could give you a lead on the section of transmission to look at.
No easy fix for this kind of problem, so disassembly & inspection will be necessary at some point in the future. Narrowing it down can save you some time, though.

Just a footnote to the first post, the transmission top cover is quite easily removed on these Landini models, which exposes the speed change section of the transmission.
I'd probably still check the magnetic plugs first, then make a call on lifting the cover.
A visual check may reveal any bearing or gear failure from there. Don't be afraid to "lever" the suspect 3rd gear back and forth, to see if there is any excess radial play in the gear.

Hi Bill,
It's been a while since I
have done one of these, but for memery the tractor can be separated between the rear of the clutch bellhousing, and the transmission. I believe this is the case even if your tractor is fitted with a reduction(creeper)speed. Leave the fuel tank, dash, etc intact on the tractor.
