275 Injection Pump

My Massey 275 appears to have injection pump failure. What is the best way to remove the pump? I am unsure of how to verify that the engine is at TDC #1. Is there a mark on the crankshaft or timing pin hole? Worse case scenario I have to pull the rocker cover and watch the push rods. Thanks in advance for any tips

If you had any sort of service manual you would know you don't need to do any of that. Drain the coolant, remove the lower radiator hose then the cover in front of the pump. Under that are three bolts that hold the drive gear to the pump. Remove those bolts. Look for any external timing marks on the pump mounting flange and the engine timing cover. Note how they match up. When you put the pump back on set the marks where they were. The drive gear in the timing cover won't get out of place while the pump is off, just don't crank or turn the engine. That might cause a problem.

Thanks very much for your helpful info. Bought this tractor new in 1980 when we lived in South Carolina. It has moved a couple of times with us, now in Minnesota. The manuals got lost along the way. Fortunately, until now it hasn't given us a bit of trouble. Thanks again.

Out of curiosity how did you diagnose the pump was inoperable? Leaking, not running at full speed, hard/no start, etc.?
Thanks!

A diesel expert checked it out and that's his opinion. Was in the field , not working hard running along good, all of a sudden it speeds up, after a few seconds it goes back to what it was, then it repeats 4 or 5 times finally quits, no start, push pump feels tight- its nearly new as is filter- My expert thinks it needs to be sent for repair. He is more familiar with JD, has never worked on a Massey.. What do you think? Thanks

Might be as simple as the constant bleed orifice fitting plugged on the filter base...

That sounds about right. If Dieseltech sees this he can give you his professional MF opinion, a lot better than mine;) I had one that would quit randomly, but not hunt for RPM, and the fuel tap at the bottom of the tank was fully clogged with rust/junk. Cleaned it out and it ran fine. Given that you were able to bleed it after the filter change says that you "probably" have good fuel flow to the pump.
THANKS for posting back!

Surging like that sure sounds like more of a fuel supply problem than an injection pump problem. Air or cavitation in the IP.

Try rigging a gravity fed fuel supply directly to the IP. I have a one gallon water bottle with a rubber fuel line coming out with one of those inline filters in the rubber line for occasions when I want to bypass the rest of the fuel system. (We call it the IV bottle)
