Ever had this happen?
We pulled the head on the 706 and was reinstalling it after having it resurfaced. Dropped the push rods in and one was massively out of spec. It would have taken almost a half inch of adjustment to set the gap correctly while the rest of the rocker arms only needed minor adjustment. We played around with it, rolled the engine over once or twice then pulled the inspection cover off. The lifter had come completely out of the hole and was sitting right beside the hole it came out of. My son cleaned it and dropped it back into the hole - it actually sat fairly tight. The only thing I can think of is the greasy mess in the bottom of the lifter suck to the pushrod as it was removed and lifted the lifter out of the hole.
