We are looking for a compact diesel tractor to replace a couple of our antique gas jobs. Found a couple 284 I-H for sale at seemingly decent prices. One is TWD other one is FWA Anyone have experience with them good or bad?
Thanks in advance!

We scrapped our gas version of model. Engine parts are impossible to find and so are most others. I favor IH but that particular model is a dead end.

I don't think they have an Independent PTO. I believe the PTO is transmission driven. No differ than an IH H or M PTO.
For money you can get tractors with Independent or Live PTO.

I looked into buying a diesel one earlier this spring for $1800 (CDN) and the owner was at least honest about it. He said the parts are extremely hard to come by and there are few in scrap yards so fixing any problems is becoming cost prohibitive.

Tractor was built by Komatsu, gas engine was a Mazda, diesel was a Nissan. Cute little tractor but impossible to find parts for.

Two ways to look at a tractor like that 1) Impossible to find parts for it so don't buy it.2) Buy it and probably pick up parts tractors cheap because no one can find parts to fix them. That's what I've done with the AC 5030/5020 tractors.

Like all the other poster have told you. If you have steering sector problems have to have the parts made or convert it to something else.
