2840 high-low

I have a 2840 John Deere that the high-low,or 2 speed is totaly shot, the planetary gears are bad,the drum they go into is broke,is there any way to eliminate it? The parts seem to be for that model only, and for what I'm using it for I really don't need it. Any thoughts or input would be helpful.

Only shafts that I can guess might replace hyd hi-lo clutch assembly on a 2840 are R59988 &R55276 designed to fit a 2640 with ind pto & NO hyd hi-lo or reverser. Extensive parts catalog research would be required to confirm 2640 shafts would fit a 2840.

Have you considered welding Hi-lo clutch components rotating parts together?

Not yet,but the thought has crossed my mind, more concerned about welding hardened parts together

Hey rdl... What are the operating symptoms of your tractor? I have a 2240 (early S/N), that has the Hi/Lo, that only really wants to work in Hi. If put in Lo, it tries to bog the engine. I’m just using it in Hi, but I need to start digging into it. Looking for guidance on what to look for. Thanks.

Might be able to find a useable used one at a wrecking yard ? I know back when I repaired one in a 2840 the parts subbed over to newer numbers. It may also work in other tractors too like a 2940 ? You would have to see if the whole assembly number fit other models as that would help in search.

It's all apart, the panetary gears and carrier are junk, the drum it fits into is broke, the pto clutch and brake are shot,it would be nice to eliminate it and use it that way

My guess is someone attempted to tow start the 2840 which has a very long history of being difficult & slow to start when engine & hyd's are at operating temp.
