I don't think it would be a good Idea, they have plenty of issues just trying to farm with them...

That's why they'd be good for pulling, cheap, plenty of used parts, and nobody wants em. LOL. Really they aren't bad tractors. Compared to a 4020, not as popular but I liked the one I had.

(quoted from post at 22:44:20 09/12/12) I can't really say anything "good" about them...

I'm with you Tim. I still remember having NEW 2840's in the shop being repaired under warranty. For me they follow close behind the 2010D on JD sorriest tractor list. I can imagine the woes of trying to keep the hyd hi-lo operating on a 2840 puller!!!!!!!!!!

Wny do you think it was that when they eventually upgraded the power level of this tractor and went to the 3155 version with this same basic drivetrain that it was available in MFWD only? Sharing the load, that's why. The rear end couldn't reliably take all the power.

Hey muth4430,
I worked for a Deere dealer when the 2849 came out. I have to agree with most of the comments here. These were probably the 2nd worse tractor Deere ever made. There was probably something else worse, like maybe the 2010 but certainly not many. They didn't run well, had all kinds of hydraulic problems and if you pulled anything heavy for any amount time the drive line would fail. They didn't have very good traction either so I doubt it would make a very good puller.

It would be different as I have never seen one. They are probably one of JDs worst tractors. The 4020s were one of the best and can be made to be pretty light plus are competitive plus the fans like that style.

I too was exposed to the 2840's when they were new, working at the dealership, they were a problem from the start, Deere used the 4 cylinder transmission and put a 6 cylinder in front of it, Deere even went as far as not wanting them to have a loader on them. As a pulling tractor it would be a waste of time..

I can probably send you a few 2840's so you can get some "hands on" experience.

thanks guys for the input. i was just looking to make a light weight puller. not a HUGE money pit, just something for the 6-8000 pound range
