290 JD planter

I called local Deere dealer and they could not help me. You
say some dealers use parts depot to get parts? Can you give
me the name of your dealer ?

I got in touch with Dean in Iowa but he did not have any parts that I could use. Thanks for the effort. Surely those parts are out there somewhere.

let the dealer no you seen the part number available on parts depot and order it for you , try a couple of different dealers, you can even do it over the phone and have it shipped to you, i usually go through deere country in lancaster pa , good luck

Thanks my Deere dealer found a hub for 4o dollars in tenn.
appreciate the tip. They could not find the sprocket.

If you have a good one on the other side with that a good welding shop could rebuild your broken piece. A year ago I had 4 planters with that piece that went for scrap.

greenfrog, your part number shows for year 1953-54, lonni's part number shows from year 1954- and on , maybe theres a difference in the casting , maybe not

Lonni,
A couple more Picts...

For some reason they loaded sideways.
I was restoring a 1948 check row 290 planter. It had spoke wheels.
This sprocket came off of, yes, a more recent model ; it had solid wheels. Probably about 53 or 54. Nearby farmer gave me this old planter when he knew I was working on a restoration project. The one I restored was my father?s.
You think this sprocket will work for you?

Well darn it. That?s the closest match I?ve seen. Yes that eight sided shaft on the hub is probably 1-1/2 long. I?ll keep looking

That is probably why it broke off in the first place...kind of like too much torque on a deep well socket!
Anyway, good to chat with ya on a common interest. I actually thought there was not that much variation among parts on these old planters

I will do some more measuring on my sprocket. It could have been that mine had just a 3/8 ? recess also.
Does yours measure 21/2 in from sprocket to the end and 3/4 from Sprocket to the other end?

Yes, mine measures about 2 1/8 on long side and 3/4 on short side. Not quite the same. I?m mystified about how deep the hex end is on yours. 🤔🤔
Where you at? I?m in west central Illinois.
Are you restoring one? Is this sprocket for looks or for actual driving?

I?m near Evansville in in Gibson county. Yes I was wanting to plant sweet corn with it. The inside of the sprocket is worn so bad you can?t make a determination how deep the hex was. If yours is 21/8 on long side v/s 21/2 I don?t think it would work. I?ll just have to keep looking. Thanks . A machine shop could recreate that sprocket I was told. Probably be expensive. May have call it a yard ornament !!

Lonni, here is my display at local county fair. 1942 case sc and 1948 checkrow planter. Both were my dad?s and restored by me.

Lonni, anyway good chatting with you. Good luck on the sprocket project. YT is great for finding such parts. I traded some parts I had for some parts another guy needed. Where else could one make connections for that.

lonni, you have a later planter , thats what that part number is for , my friend does not have the later one , he does have the earlier one though, i guess keep looking around,
