A fellow called me about selling his 3500hr.2940 with 148 loader.I sold one[ pretty much wholesale] a while back for a guy but did not run it and see they get negative response usually. It is cheaper than an older 4020 and looks to have a strong front axle but looks like an oversized utility tractor.Any Input would help.Thanks.JD should have probably stuck with the 20 series.

2940's were better than the 2840's but not as dependable as the 2950/55. The traction clutches have a history of shorter lives on loader tractors. I despise the Mannheim tractors with SGB's that have the hyd operated clutch pedals. I agree that the 6 cyl Mannheim tractors look similar to utility tractors on steroids. I personally prefer Waterloo tractors over Dubuque/Mannheim tractors.

I"ve had mine for 4 years. Had a starting problem (clicking w/ no cranking)but thanks to Tx Jim, problem fixed. It has a 260 loader on it, fwd and 7600 hrs. It was well cared for prior to my ownership and has been a very dependable tractor for me. No problems. "Care" makes a big difference.

Deere should have stuck with the 55 series.
The tractor will depend on who serviced and operated it over the past 33+ years.
Pull the trans filter and screen and look for problems. Run a antifreeze test strip to measure corrosion inhibitor. Nobody seems to check it, just freeze protection. Any diesel's wet sleeves will cavitate through if abused with ancient coolant and tap water.
Dad's 2355 loader tractor at home has 8000+ hrs on the factory clutch . His brothers 1640 loader tractor had the clutch totally trashed by 4000hrs.
