2950 john deere

I have a 2950 john deere fairly new to me. I hooked up a 15 foot rotary cutter and after 2 hours the hydraulic system was so hot the loader would not operate. and it was just the hydraulics that was hot.
let it cool over night next day started the tractor to try and find why it was getting hot. And now have a leak on top of the transmission on what I believe is the shift cover for the PTO. So before I take
off the cover and try to replace the seal that's leaking would there be anything else I need to look at? or a reason why the hydraulics got so hot?

With hyd oil at operating temp, 3pt raised look inside open hyd filler hole hole behind seat for moving/spraying oil which would indicate faulty rockshaft control valve seals. Does hyd get hot with pto in off position? I also suggest to cap line that supplies steering valve with oil to determine if hyd's operate cooler. What type valve controls loader(scv or ind)?

I am using a separate cross valve for my loader, my issue with the leak on top of the transmission is going to stop me from doing any of that. the leak is pretty bad, didn't know if the 2 where related or not

PTO or hydraulic driven batwing?

Did you have a SCV locked in a pumping position after moving a remote cylinder to operating position?

it is PTO batwing and no nothing seems locked in place and the SVC did not seem to be in a locked position

it was a brand new valve about 4 months ago so it should still be. when the hydraulic system is cold it works great. I am thinking that maybe I have a high pressure side leak in some component? just thought it was odd for the shift cover to just start leaking. but maybe the oil got to hot for it....

How about the linkage for the 3pt? Is there supposed to be some play after the rockshaft tops out?

Chase a high presure leak in the system. The closed-center system has high pressure constantly to all valves and accessories. A leak equals heated oil. Look for the hottest spot with a infrared temp tester.
