2955 steering return filter leak

I was getting ready to remove my disc mower today and the steering return filter started spraying hydraulic fluid. Is it possible that this filter just sprung a leak or should I be looking for some other problem.

Replace the filter and go from there. It gets some vibration in that spot and can
fracture.

I have a 2940 and for some reason it builds up pressure and has busted 4 or 5 of these filters over the years.Before it started doing this it would
blow the gasket out from under the gearshift top. I have talked to the best mechanic at the dealer but he has no clue why it does that. He said its
not suppose to do that. That's the same answer my wife gave me. I've had the pressure checked twice and it was right, but it was checked when it was
cold, it blows this filter out after it is warmed up and been using it for a while. Any ideas on this.

Mine was hot at the time. I had been mowing for a couple of hours. The filter had a split in the seam where it was assembled.

Plugged filter?

What pressure checked ? That is a drain line back to the sump is is at atmospheric pressure, same as the sump .
The only pressure in the line between the PS and the filter is the back pressure across the filter .

I don't think the filter was plugged, I blew thru it and it was free. What pressure do I need to check. The high pressure. Or the low pressure.

. How familiar are you with how the hydraulics are designed and function ? Do you have a manual ?
Pressure on the inlet side of the PS filter should only be 5-10psi. Just enough to push PS drain oil through the filter .

I do have a manual. The only pressures I have tested previously are the charge pressure and the pressure coming out of the SCV.

Is the PS unit flowing oil to the filter and into the sump when the steering wheel is not being turned ?
