2N Alternator Trouble

I've got a 2N that's been converted to 12v. All of a sudden the battery is no longer charging. When I check the voltage at the battery with it running, the voltage is jumping all over the place extremely fast. Strangely I even get a low reading with only one of the probes touching. Any ideas what may have happened or what the issue could be?

that's unfortunately normal, assuming you're using a digital meter. they don't like the ignition noise. try an analog meter if u have one.

If your alternator is charging. You should be able to place a medium size pocket knife on the rear bearing of the alternator and it will "stick to it" because the bearing will be magnetized.

Gonna have to try that!

Is it a one wire alternator? If so, while it's running, take a jumper wire and momentarily touch the number 1 regulator pin on the alternator. You will probably have to remove that rubber plug.

Well, I went out and checked and found that both of mine are magnetized all the time . makes no difference if the tractor is running or not. One wire alternators.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately it s not a one wire. Was working fine last fall, so no clue why it appears to have stopped charging all of a sudden.
