2N first gear noise

WI2N

New User
Just picked up a 1945 2N with high low with the pull knob on the dash. Everything runs perfect except first gear makes a lot of noise. Doesn't matter high or low. All other gears and in neutral it sounds great. Any ideas?

WI2N.......turn off yer hearing aides. Yeah, ya gotta BAD bearing in yer tranny. Unless yer a major gearhead, I wouldn't muck around with it. It ain't gonna fall apart on ya. Iff'n I remember correctly, yer Sherman don't operate in 1st gear ennyways. Don't try to shift yer Sherman while runnin' down the road, shift while STOPPED. And YES, ya haffta use yer clutch. Slippin' the clutch is OK ........HTH, the amazed Dell

If this is a Sherman Step Up it uses the same 1st transmission gear whether or not in overdrive. Sounds like 1st gear is worn.

If it's not doing it in any other gear, probably not a bearing.

Still new to these tractors but i believe the High low does effect 1st gear. pushed in i run at a slow jog and pulled out is what i would call a grunt gear. about half that speed.

I only change the high low with the clutch in. is there any way to check the condition of first gear through the filler port? The fluid is clean, nothing shiny from what i can see.

I am plenty handy with a wrench as a Diesel mech but i would rather not split the tractor if i dont have to.

WI2N ,Your transmission could have a chipped tooth on the 1st gear and also cluster gear. The Sherman step up just increases the speed/RPMs the main transmission turns and the noise gets faster in step up position.Just remove the top cover with the gear shift in neutral position for a look see of the gears.

All the gears in the transmission are used whether in high or low. The sherman is in front of the transmission.

1st and third share a common shaft so it it only noise in first then I would suspect the gear itself and not the bearing.

In the effect of a bad gear what am I lookingn at for repairs. Is it possible to just replace the gear or am I looking at replacing a gearset? lll pull the cover this weekend and see what I find.

I jusst looked at ebay and there are some nice gears on there and really pretty good price, I searched for "ford 2n transmission gears"

the down side is that the trans has to come out to replace the gears. Not hard, just time consuming.

Or if you only find a chipped tooth or two, don't worry about it, might drain the oil and ook for pieces. If it was mine and I wanted to run it very much, I would get aa used set of gears and replace them.

Just use the gears that sound good seems like the best advice, unless you thoroughly enjoy working on these tractors.

I had a very similar problem with my 54 NAA.

Took it apart and discovered that the rear bearing was so worn that it let 1st gear get loose on the shaft. 1st gear had about 1/4 of free movement front to back on the shaft.

I replaced the rear bearing and put everything back together tightly....and no more noise!
