There is a 2N for sale about 50 miles from home for $550. Looks pretty good but doesnt run. Is the 2N a good fixer upper tractor? Or should I avoid this one?

Need a LOT more information to answer your question, but $550 is not a bad price at all for a non-runner.

If you can post back with more info, folks might be able to give you an idea of what it would take to get it running again.

If everything is there, and all it needs is tune-up stuff and a good clean-up, you might have a workin' tractor for another couple hundred.

If parts are missing/broke and it needs a compleate overhaul, you could easily add $3-5K to your purchase price.

A refurbed tractor in excellent running shape might bring $2-3K depending on where you live and what implements are thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Read through John Smith's site for some good background on what you might be letting yourself in for.

I have never lost a dime offering $300 for a non run'n $500 tractor,,, got turned down but also got calls to bring my $300 and haul it away...

WARNING  all I know I read on the Internet,,, do it enuff and you can become a guru also,,, not responsible for damages,,, I read it and just pass it along,,, proceed with caution

I paid $675 for my 8N off Ebay. Was sold as non running. All it needed was gas tank cleaned out and new points and plugs. Runs great. I also found out once I got it home it has the Sherman Hi/Low transmission. Just had to get a shift lever for it. Also needed new tires and rimes
For $550 I think you wouldn't go wrong. You could alway sell parts from it and get more than your money back if it came down to it.

PICTURES!

It all depends on the condition. How badly does it not run? How's the sheet metal? That's often the worst part.

For $550, if it's not completely a wreck, I'd go for it.

I love my 2N, it's a fun little tractor that does a lotta work for it's size.

Thanks for your replies. I called the seller this morning and he said it was leaking water from the block because of a head stud that has been repaired with a heli-coil. The seller said that the block would need to be drilled bigger and a new heli-coil. I decided to pass since I wasnt comforatble with the block damage but the tractor has been sold to someone. It was on craigs list.
