2n has no spark

My 2N will not start. There is no spark. I checked and cleaned the points. Nothing appears to be broken and everything looks correct. When I check the voltage to the top of the coil it measures 6 volts with points closed and around 3.5 v when they are open. If I turn over the engine the voltage fluctuates between 6v and 3.5. Replaced cap and rotor as well. Not sure what else to check.

trucker.......yer top of coil voltages are in the correct ballpark. Spark occurs when the points OPEN (6-volts) But that aintchur problem. Me? I'd open the gascap and check ya gott gas and relieve the VACUUM. Yer 2N carbie is GRAVITY fed and the tank vent is often plugged by mud-dobbers. Heres the drill, throttle 1/3rd, ignition ON, 2-turns of glass wheel, 2-rumpa-rumpas on starter motor, and then QUICK pull of spring loaded choke knobbie. Shuld gittcha started. BTW, when checkin' yer gas, make certain its really GAS not WATER. Last I've heard, water don't burn. .......HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
 
How are you checking spark?? With it hooked up and the ignition switch on you should see and hear a spark when you open the points by hand. Also you can take an old plug wire and cut the end off and then hold it close to the block and when it spins over and the rotor is at the right place you should get a good blue white spark that jumps a a 1/4 inch gap or more
 
I have an inline spark tester that I always use to indicate spark. It connects between the plug and plug wire. Not getting any spark at all. The ignition switch is on.
 
I do not an never have trusted an in line spark tester they can go bad but a plug wire held close to the block will never not tell you what is going on
 
Your problem is most likely something very simple like a short caused by the condenser wire where it hooks up or other such simple problem. That is why i say open and close he points by hand to check for a spark there. No spark at the points no spark any place else

Having gas in the tank isn't the same as having gas in the carb bowl.

Unscrew the drain plug & check for fuel.

An in-line spark tester isn't very reliable, Get an adjustable gap checker instead.

Assuming that the bushings & advance weights are ok (*see below), & that you have correct voltage to the coil (battery voltage with the points open and about half that with the points closed), the problem is in the distributor.

Once you get the distributor on the bench, the first thing you need to check is bushing wear. If the shaft has any sideways movement AT ALL, the bushings must be replaced. (*** see below).

The most common electrical failure (no spark, weak spark) points on the front mount are:

1. The insulator under the brass concave head screw & where the copper strip attaches. (it?s fiber & will wear out; poke & prod w/ your meter leads to make sure it still works) If you need to replace the insulator, use a .250 x 3/8 nylon square nylon anchor nut available at most big box home stores

2. The pigtail at the bottom of the coil not making contact w/ the concave head brass screw inside the distributor. (With the coil on, the pigtail must firmly contact the brass screw. No contact = no spark

3. The copper strip is broken or grounded to the plate. (look very carefully for cracks & breaks).

4. The condenser wire grounding to the plate or side of the distributor.

5. The tab on the bottom of the coil not making contact w/ the brass button on the cap. (With the cap on, the tab must firmly contact the brass button. No contact = no spark.)

6. Incorrect positioning of the spring clip on the plate causing the pigtail to ground. (the open part of the clip goes between 7 & 9 o?clock on the plate. That puts the straight part of the clip opposite of the timing screw at 3 o?clock)

7. Incorrect seating of the coil on the distributor due to a loose bail or no gasket.(the coil must not move at all; if it does, replace the gasket or bail. Or stick some cardboard under the bail).

8. Water/moisture inside the cap due to gasket failure or the absence of a gasket. (the cap AND coil have gaskets)

9. Dirty/corroded/burned/incorrectly gapped or misaligned points. I use only Wells, Blue Streak or Echlin brand points (* *see below). If you are using quality points and cannot get the gap to open to .015, chances are you need to replace the bushings.

10. Burned rotor, cracked/carbon tracked cap.

After you find the problem & re-check the point gap, do a continuity check before you put the distributor back on the tractor. Before you start, make sure your meter/light works.

With the distributor still off the tractor, follow these steps:

1. Coil off, cap off, points open. One probe on the brass screw & the other on both sides of the open points. On the side closest to the cam, you should have continuity. Not on the other side! If you do, you will also have continuity everywhere because the points are grounded.

2. Coil off, cap off, points open. One probe on the brass screw & the other anywhere on the body of the distributor. You should have no continuity! Now, rotate the tang on the distributor....as the points open & close, you have continuity (closed) and lose it when they open.

3. Put the coil on the distributor, cap off, points open. One probe on the lead on the top of the coil, the other on the cam side of the open points. You should have continuity!

4. Coil on, cap off, points open. One probe on the lead on the top of the coil, the other anywhere on the body of the distributor. You should have no continuity!

At this point, I just put the distributor, coil & cap all back on the tractor as a unit. The reason I do this is because it is real easy to get the cap or coil misaligned trying to put it back together, one piece at a time. The result is something gets broken or you get a ?no spark? problem.
It's possible to put it back on wrong & break it. Look at the slot on the end of the cam shaft. Whatever angle it happens to be, turn the distributor tang to match it. Make sure you can tell the wide side from the narrow side on both the cam & distributor! (close counts). Place the distributor on the front of the engine, gently push it in place & slowly turn the distributor body until you feel the tang slip into the slot. Rotate the distributor body until the bolt holes line up. Hand tighten the two bolts until the distributor body is flush with the timing gear cover.


* Unscrew the plate hold down screw & remove the C clip to get the plate out. Remove the shaft & weights. The weights should freely move.

*** There are three ways to replace the bushings in a front distributor:
1. Buy new bushings (part numbers 9N12120 front & 18-12132 rear). Press out the old ones, press in the new ones and ream to fit. CAUTION: do not try this unless you have a press & know how to use it. If you break the base, a new one costs $130. If you bend the tower which holds the front bushing, a new plate will cost you $30.

2. Take the new bushings and distributor to your local machine shop.

3. Send the distributor out for bushing replacement if you do not have a local machine shop.

I guess I should have mentioned that I do have fuel to the carb and the fuel is flowing well. I tested for spark with both an inline spark tester, a gap tester and also a plug removed from the block and grounded out to the block. No spark. I replaced the cap, rotor condenser and points. Tested the points open and closing on the bench with a volt meter and there are no shorts or opens that are not suppose to be there. Installed the distributor back on tractor completely assembled and measured voltage at top of coil. 6 volts when points are closed, 3.5 volts when points are open. Voltage fluctuates when engine turns over between 6 and 3.5 volts/ Key is on. Switch works.

Tractor started about a month ago but was out of town and did not use it for the month. Will probably take distributor off again tomorrow but not sure what I could have missed.

I'm sure it is something simple as well. Just a bit confused on how to open and close the points by hand. Do I do this on the bench or when it is attached to the tractor. I tested continuity while on the bench with an ohm meter but of course there was no spark without being connected to the battery. IF attached to the tractor, how do I turn the distributor by hand with it on the tractor to check for a spark? Might be a dumb question but my brain is fried right now.
 
Need to check the bearings but if they do need replacing, do you know of a place to send it to have it done? I'll have to look around here for a machine shop unless one of the mechanics around here had a press I can use.
 
You open and close them wit ha small screw driver or other such thing no need to turn the engine over just have top open them and close them and watch for a spark when you do that
 
No bearings in there. Just front & rear bushings.

Try a local machine shop because they need to be reamed to fit.

If you don't have any close by, I think nnalert's will install them.

I'm now really at a loss as to where to look now. Removed the distributor and cleaned the points again. Checked the gap.. Gap set at .015. Bushings good. Points open and close correctly. Put coil back on and checked connection with pigtail. Have good contact. Coil fits tightly. Installed coil and went to tractor. Connected wire from switch to top of coil, metal part of distributor to engine and turned over by hand with switch on, points sparked correctly. Put cap back on and reinstalled onto tractor. Connected all plug wires to cap and also top coil wire. Using an old spark plug got good spark. Put everything back together and tried to start it. Nothing. Turned over fine but nothing. Even tried a shot of starting fluid in carb intake which usually get at least a puff of smoke indicating it wants to start. Nothing. Pulled the plug wire off and again tested for spark. No spark. Switch is good. Resistor seems to be good. Gas is flowing fine. Not sure what else could be causing this. Any other suggestions would really be appreciated.
 
Run a hot wire from the battery right to the coil and see if you have spark then. If yes your problem is from the coil back to the battery ir no your problem is in the distributor and maybe the points slipped or if it has a new condenser it is a bad one
 
Have full voltage right to the top of the coil. Measured voltage from the screw on the top of coil to + ground. Measures 6.3 volts. Even tried your suggestion and ran a separate wire from the battery to the coil. No difference. Guess it's back to taking the distributor off again but not sure what to find other then replacing the condenser again.
 
Had a similar problem with my 8N. No spark to the plug. Voltage ok to the coil...but nothing to the plugs. Ended up being the coil. Check the continuity from the top post to the spring...this one measured ok on my bad coil. Then check the continuity from the top post to the flat post that contacts the distributor cap...this one had no continuity on mine...and was the problem. New coil and bam...fired up like it was 1949.
 
Now days I do not ever replace the condenser unless I know for sure it is bad since too many new ones are bad from the get go. I have some machines that have the same condenser that was in them when I got them 10 plus years ago
 
having same problem with 2n just did your test on coil got same reading you did good on spring and nothing on flat probe that contacts dist. cap going to get new coil and hope that's my problem to

Before installing the new coil, compare readings between the old and new. Check continuity and resistance on both coils, for both contacts vs the top post, and compare. Should definitely see a resistance measure on the flat probe for the new coil...and likely nothing on the old coil. If they happen to read the same between coils, at least you can return it if you haven't installed it.
