it's strange. i see some listings for an alleged new part. one listed a price of $155, most listed no price and said to submit a quote request. at least one said NOS. all of the listings looked sketchy :(

I'm attaching a photo from the parts manual that shows the linkage for the start button.
As you can see, 9N11606 is the mechanical button that usually doesn't go bad. 9N11450B like JMOR pointed out is the actual switch. Some people have glued a penny or something to the end of the push rod to get more travel into the switch.

I am having a problem with this also. I unscrewed the foot switch and tried pressing the lever that pushes the rod, but it didn't do anything. It moved, but nothing started or even turn over. Is the real starter button bad? Can I take out the real starter button and push it by hand to see if it works? Thanks for any thoughts and help

Don't know where you got that part number from but it ain't right. Aftermarket clone suppliers like to create their own part numbers. It matters where you buy from.

There were THREE different Start Pushbuttons for the N's. The first early 9N switch, 9N-11450-A, (SEE PIX) was mounted on the LH dash panel. Used 39-40. Also, an AD for the new 8N. Note Neutral Safety Start Push Button by shifter cover.

When FORD moved the button to the top shifter cover it had a new switch, 9N-11450-B, used 40-47. When the 8N was released, it had a new switch now, p/n 8N-11500 and this was used on all models after until 1964. It matters which one you need and these do not interchange. Wiring is also different on each so consult your Master Parts Manual. Here's a LINK but this site here also has parts too.
