2N thermostat

After my last question about using a thermostat in my N I was educated as to the necessitity of using one at all times.I have on old in hose thermostat that I would like to use but after cleaning it up it failed the boil test. (Did not open)I looked it over and noticed that it is gummed up with something that is probably insulating it to some degree or preventing it from working freely. How can I clean it up to shiny? Right now I'm soaking it in diesel to see if that will remove the gunk.

Richard,Soak in a jar with it covered with vinegar, the acid in the vinegar will clean it up.After its clean do your boil test again to see if its good or not.

I just purchased a thermostat along with a new hose, but what is the trick to get it in the hose without damaging it. It appears to be an extremely tight fit.

In AZ you wouldn't need one in my opinion. I've had too many old tractor mechanics tell me not to use a thermostat because they say that a thermostat causes more problems than it's worth. I know a lot of the guys here claim different and I've only been using Ns for 25 to 27 years so.............whatever.........

Always important to get any engine up to temp ASAP no matter what the outside air temp is. It also heats the engine up evenly.. Alot of old timers say you don't need one because thats what they grew up knowing, but as time went on things change and people discover things out. Just my 2 cents. take care..
