"2ND" casting tags ...

Where are the rest of the "2ND" castings on the tractor?
i have only found them on the engine, but haven't checked everywhere yet.
i've known the date tag was a blank box since i bought it, but just noticed the "2ND" tag on the valve cover this winter while fixing some things up top.
i then found it on the block and head, but haven't checked other engine parts closely.

There can be many numbers in casting that have nothing to do with the part numbers. Most castings were sourced from foundries and they would have their own system to identify parts and the patterns used. If a flaw shows up they would know which pattern was damaged. Also tags were added for date poured. Some would look like a raised area with rivet heads showing or a round tag.

Do you have the build card for the tractor from Floyd County? They should also be able to search by engine serial number.

no. i've never bought a build card for any Olivers, despite considering it a few times in the past. that might provide another clue though, or at least confirm whether the engine came with the tractor originally.

i assumed these tags were not part of any normal part numbers/strings, but something else. just curious if anyone knew the specifics. i'm sure someone still does, but they may not be available here.

I wonder if that's not a shift stamp, possibly they were having quality control issues, and someone decided to get a tighter explanation of when it was made? GG. So 2nd shift......
