3 brush generator internal wiring

Need to know which two brushes are the main brushes and which brush connects to A terminal and which to F terminal. Thanks for any help given.

Here's my method to describe what brush wires where.

The grounded brush is obvious,,,,,,,,,,The brush 180 opposite from grounded brush attaches to the first (of two) internal Field
windings,,,,,,,,,The THIRD BRUSH, separated slightly away from the Field brush, wires to the gennys ARM post. The closer the third brush
(one to ARM post) is to the ungrounded fixed brush the higher the output, further away = less charge.

This help ???

Heres another diagram........The brush 180 opposite from the grounded goes to the Field winding, other to the ARM post. These are NOT my diagrams so nooooooooooo warranty lol

Your description sounds like you may have a Delco Remy generator. Here is a link to Part Two of a DR generator training manual. The Third Brush Generator info starts on page 15.

You're welcome, I cant guarantee BOTH the diagrams I found are accurate HOWEVER they BOTH agree that:


1) The Field attaches to the Brush that's 180 opposite from the Grounded Brush........

2) The ARM post attaches to the one off to one side a bit (often adjustable) and NOT direct across from the fixed Grounded Brush

Take a look at your Generator,,,,,Any Delco diagrams specific you your unit,,,,,,,Do what they show NOT necessarily the two diagrams I
found, I have no idea if they are accurate !!!!!!!!!! even though they DO AGREE

THE PLOT THICKENS LOL

NOW I have found TWO diagrams that BOTH agree and show as follows:

Diagrams 1 and 2 AGREE so much as

1) The Field attaches to the Brush that's 180 opposite from the Grounded Brush........

2) The ARM post attaches to the one off to one side a bit (often adjustable) and NOT direct across from the fixed Grounded Brush

HOWEVER

I found a third diagram labeled for a 6 Volt Farmall H 3 brush generator THATS DIFFERENT THEN THE TWO DIAGRAMS ABOVE
The ARM is the one 180 opposite from the fixed grounded brush and the Field attaches to the one offset hmmmmmmmmmmm lol



SOOOOOOOOO my advice is take a look at your Generator,,,,,Any Delco diagrams specific you your unit,,,,,,,Do what they show NOT
necessarily the three diagrams I found, I have no idea if they are accurate !!!!!!!!!! even though two AGREE while the third is different

Use the diagram specific to and the one that matches YOUR generator TAKE YOUR PICK

In my experience the moveable brush has always supplies the field current.

The output current is taken from the brush 180 opposite the "grounded" brush.

That being said I've worked on more Delcos than Autolites and other brands.
 
If I designed the wiring my own personal preference would be to have the brush that wires to the external ARM/GEN post (which is the
gennys OUTPUT) BE 180 OPPOSITE FROM THE FIXED GROUNDED BRUSH.

Then I would control the Field current which regulates the gennys OUTPUT by adjusting the Brush that wires to the Field windings and
closer to the ARM brush the more field current the more output,,,,,,,,,,, but further away from the ARM brush less OUTPUT

THEREFORE My preference is this diagram

Both the Autolite and Delco I worked on were 6v. I noticed the difference in the YT article and was going to point it out in a post but though I'd keep my mouth shut to
prevent the entrance of my foot.
 
Thats similar to the ones I worked on but most were Delco?? Despite different diagrams (no warranty NOT mine) I found I AGREE
WITH YOU the GEN/ARM (gennys output) I prefer be the one 180 opposite from the grounded brush.

The two main brushes will be 180 degrees apart for a 2 or 3 brush generator. One will connect to the armature terminal and one to ground. The arm brush will be the one closest to the 3rd brush. The 3rd brush will be the brush at a slight angle from the other two. It connects to the field. The 3rd brush is typically movable but not always. The main brushes are occasionally movable but usually are fixed. If they are movable then they will move as a pair. The 3rd brush, if adjustable, will move by itself.

I cannot think of any reason the 3rd brush would connect to the arm terminal and a main brush connected to the field. That is not how the 3rd brush generator works. The 3rd brush is never 180 degrees across from the grounded brush. That is the main brush.

Moving the 3rd brush in the direction of the shaft rotation, away from the arm brush, will decrease the output of the generator.

Never run a 3rd brush generator without a load, it will burn the field winding in seconds.

As an aside, a 3rd brush generator often will motor poorly but charge well due to the 3rd brush being so far from the neutral point and in the opposite direction than would be needed for a motor.

For your question, the two brushes 180 apart are the main brushes and should connect to the ground and the other to the armature terminal. The remaining brush should be at a slight angle from the other two and is the 3rd brush connecting to the field winding.
 
Thats what this diagram indicates for sure !!!!!!!!!! GEN/ARM and Grounded brush are 180 apart opposite from each other

Some artists (drawing diagrams) don't always know what they are doing/drawing, as evidences here & with Picasso, who thought the dog had both eyes on the same side of its head!? Drugs may have been involved?
