3 Point Carry All

Why do some choose carry alls? It seems like the more useful implements would be a reversible dirt scoop and/or a wagon. The dirt scoop has less capacity (volume), but a lot more overall usefulness. If you want to haul a lot of stuff, then get a wagon.

I have a 4x6 carryall we have used for years for working on fences, hauling feed and mineral to live stock. It saw a lot of use in our poultry barns
Can’t get much fencing supplies in a dirt scoop and it’s hard to get a wagon through some of the wooded areas we fence
We used to use a 2 wheel trailer but the carryall is is handier

Bottom line it is personal choice, just like AC, Case, Ford, JD, MF, etc.

Other than digging, in what other ways is a dirt scoop overall more useful than a carry-all?

If you aren't going to be digging with it the dirt scoop is much more limited to what can be carried in it than a carry-all and wagons may not fit where you can go with a tractor with a 3-pt mounted carry-all. Hard to carry a barrel or two of water in a dirt scoop and it could be harder to navigate to where you fill or dump them if they are on a wagon. If you are picking through a small wood lot you can bring out a fair amount of wood on a carry-all, not much in a dirt scoop. Some carry-alls can dump.

3-point hitch forks are handy and with a pallet or crate, can be used as a carry-all. I have forks with a socket in the fork carrier, for a bale spear which adds another use.

A dumping 3-point hitch loader bucket would be more useful than a dirt scoop. But still less capacity than a carry-all might have.

I built one for the wife to use on her Oliver Super 55 to haul things around the yard, and from the greenhouse to the garden, but like everything else, it ended up in the tool shed tipped up on it's side with junk piled on it. Dad used one back in the day to haul crates of silage from the bunker silo to the stanchion barn all winter. Couldn't beat it for that.

Before we had the flatbed we used the carryall for fencing and other tasks you would use a pig mover for that wasn’t moving pigs

A lift platform to put a ladder on to get to a second story

It tucks away under a pallet rack too that neither a wagon or hog carrier will a handy generator mount as well the welder/air compressor used to ride on ours again before the flatbed

Built one on the frame I bought decades ago, I used it a lot to carry stuff. Pick up rocks with the little loader tractor, could pick up heavy rock with the bucket and pile rock on the carry all. A trailer would have left more tracks in the crop and less manuverable, a scoop would cost more and hold less.

Kind of got away from using it the past decade, just found other ways to do stuff. Got a bigger loader so it holds more, and don’t do some of the things I used to do with the carry all. Still don’t have a dirt scoop and don’t use a wagon more than I used to….

Carry all is an every day tool, While excavation is more likely to be just 3-4 times a year.

IBC (just the cage) goes on mine for gathering firewood. Handy setup and easier to maneuver in the woods than with a trailer.

We have about 80 acres of 85% forest. I've never had much trouble getting even a full sized wagon close enough to where I needed it. We had a few wagon trails through the forest, not always well cleared. I can see the utility of a carry all. It's just that I like to minimize the number of implements. I either need to haul a whole bunch of stuff (wagon), or relatively small, sometimes heavy stuff. I use pallet forks for some items, sometimes with a pallet, sometimes not (debated creating a platform for it). Being short on storage space and not liking to leave stuff outside in the weather, a usually wooden carry all platform would be just another item to cram in my limited space since the wagon is absolutely essential. I guess bottom line in my case is limited storage space. I'm thinking about how I can resolve that without spending too much. I'm really getting tired of tarping and untarping.

Had one at home when kid, it feed square bales, hold 6. Fixed and built fence. Didnt have drill to plant Sudan with so dad set on and either mom or me drove using cyclone seeder. May have hauled calf or two to barn with momma in tow. Hauled fire wood and many more jobs.
