3 point sagging

I have a 1948 8n *8n123871* that the three point sags down after the tractor is shut off or the pto is shut down. The more the weight the faster she sags til the imp. hits the ground. Is there a way to lock the imps. up in the air with the 3 point, or do I have a problem? Any suggestions or info would help, this is my first tractor, and I absolutly love it for what it can do. Thanx Jason from snowy MN

Pull off the side inspection cover( it is round) and raise the lift shut off the tractor and shine a light up around the piston and see if oil is running by it and dripping down. may need rebuilt.

You probably have a leak in the ram cylinder,at the top of the sump.Remove the inspection plate at the right side[with the dipstick],and look up and see if there is a lot of leakage from the cylinder. If not, look into the oil,and see if there is a lot of turbulance swirling around.May be exhaust valve.---lha

This is to be expected from a 50 something year old tractor. For the sake of SAFETY you should always let the implement down when you "park" the tractor. You have a small leak, it can be repaired, however, still lower the lift.

If the arms drop w/ the tractor off or the clutch depressed, chances are you have a worn lift cylinder or piston (or both), a blown top cover gasket or a leaky pressure relief valve. Take the inspection plate w/ the dipstick off. Lift a heavy implement & look inside w/ the tractor running & the PTO engaged to see if you notice oil running from the top cover. If oil is running steadily from the top cover the chances are the lift cylinder needs to be rebuilt. It’s less likely, but a possibility, that the top cover gasket is bad. (It’s very difficult to detect the exact source of the oil leaking inside of the top cover while looking through the inspection port). If no oil is running down from the top cover, look at the rear of the pump in the oil with the load still on it and see if you notice turbulence in the bottom. (Some movement of oil will be normal with the PTO shaft turning). You could have a weak pressure relief valve which will be detected by turbulence in the oil. To check for a slow leak, lift a heavy implement, turn the tractor off & put a ½ inch clear plastic hose on the end of the valve & stick the other end of the hose through the inspection port. Wiith pressure in the pump, a bad valve will likely show some fluid in the hose.

I couldn't tell if the moving oil was normal or not when looking at mine but I could not hold a load, there was minor leakage from the cylinder but a steady drip I could accept, not the root cause of the quick drop. Had to drain the oil to see the pressure relief valve was bad .......... having bucket, wrench, and flashlight ready, right side inspection cover off, raised the empty lift arms under power, shut it down, hop down and pull the plug dumping the pump housing, slip around to the other side to look in the housing as the wife pushed down on the arms. I don't think I could have determined relief or control valve problems with the 5 gallons in there. Not sticking my hand in there, seen one to many "caught ins" over the years, and one was to many. Cost a bucket of oil that needed changing any way.

Holds a load now with the new relief valve. If there is not a significant stream of a leak from the top then it is in the bottom. My cylinder has a steady drip of a leak but takes about 20 minutes for the arms to leak down with the tractor off, acceptable to me. It will snatch up and hold a 6-700 lb round bale like nobodys biz'nes, little tractor is as handy as a pocket on a shirt.

like bruce said.. eventually everything sags with age :)

probably nothing a new piston and oring or relief valve won't solve.. plus some new gaskets and clean oil.. etc..

elbow grease.. etc..

Not saying that the information here isn't correct, but I read in the operators manual that you should lower the 3 point to the ground position when leaving the operators seat. LarryT

and if I need to work on an implement I make sure the brakes are set, wheels blocked, and the implement blocked up if necessary.
