3 pt pulling strength

As you can see from my name I live in SE AZ. We have a native plant called " Yucca" that has a kind of root spread of small roots, but the main root is a single thick root in the center of the plant. This root is kind of pithy and can be easly cut with whatever if you dig down to it. I have managed to jerk a couple out of the ground and was jerking on one yesterday when I had a thought," how strong are the bolts that hold the lift arms and how strong are the trumpets where the bolts mount???" Should I be jerking on anything with my 2N ??? I would back up then take off forward and really hammer the 3 point. Is this a really dumb thing to do???

I have one that my FIL beat the absolute he!! out of for 30 years, not to mention his grandsons & myself & didn't break those parts. He would put it in reverse with box blade and hit a 3 inch tree.......he thought it was a mini-bulldozer, bless his heart. I don't think you will hurt it.

I don't know about yer Yucca, got any peyote?

Anyhow...

I am sure that my lower lift pins were original, and had some pretty fair wear.

I was scraping a drive like, and had my back blade set on an angle, and had the top link cranked in to where the forward corner dug in.

I hit a pretty good root, I wanted to cut the root out, so I kept banging it with the back blade.

Right after that I learned to pull the trumpets, and replace the lower lift pins.

I broke the one on that side.

An N (or most tractors for that matter) will almost never break any thing on a straight, dead pull.
But you get to jerking on things and all bets are off.
I've done it. You've done it. Most of us have done it.
But many of us have also seen busted tranny gears, rings and pinions, axles, lower lift pins, etc, etc.
It's real hard on them to jerk like that.

Richard........what ebber you doo, DON'T pull ennythang from that handy-dandy 3-point toplink under yer butt-buckett. It will pull yer tractor over on top of you, toot-sweet. And we'll be offering condolences to yer surviving family members.

Me? I'd use a really LONG chain wrapped around the tranny and OUT UNDER the tranny and back. Don't pull from yer axle trumpets 'cuz yer lopp-sided. The momentum and inertia of 2500# of tractor, should POP them yuccas out.

Them lower 3-point links are just 5/8" bolts and are NOT that strong. .......Dell

Richard:

Tractors are made for pulling NOT jerking, whether from the three point hitch or any other attachment point.

90% of the time you will probably be just fine but then there is that 10% of the time that you may end up paying for. Sort of like a couple weeks ago I pulled a dead walnut tree down with my 841. Came down real easy but when I tried to pull the root ball out all I could do was spin. So I backed up and jerked it. I was hooked to my back blade so it was hooked a long ways back. Well the cable I was using broke and snapped back. I'm sure glad I was not sitting on the seat because that cable was wrapped all around the seat after it broke. If I had been sitting down instead of standing to the side I may have ended up in the hospital

My dad said "each jerk cost $1 in future repairs"
after all these years I know he was right. Sometimes we abuse the machine and no immediate proplem occurs but.... One day I was on the route to the village with our Ferguson TEA-20 suddenly engine was running but no power to the wheels. One rear axle was broken and after examining the axle we saw that it was 3/4 cracked for a long time and 1/4 was fresh break. Lets think that these machines have 50+ years of all sorts of operators and sometimes hard work. They still give good help if we respect them.

Re: jerking - BTDT. Pulling our old barn down -
hooked the log chain around one of the verticals, hooked up the winch line on my Bronco, and no go pulling. Got up some slack and gave'er a yank - log chain broke, and I was under the dash when the winch hook came through the winshield...... haven't jerked
anything since......

you'll find plant (etc.) pulling much easier when you run the chain/rope up and over a board (say a 2"x12") maybe 4 foot long placed several feet from the plant, then down and around the plant. this provides a lift action when you pull. they'll come out as easy as pie! ....an old farmers trick

On a more positive note, the tractor will probably long outlast the discs between your vertebrae. Whether the tractor was made for "jerking" or not, your body sure as heck wasn't. You're gonna ruin your back in no time and not be able to use the tractor at all...:(
