300 RC Muffler

I bought the "restoration quality" muffler Steiner listed for the 300. When it arrived, I took it out of the box and realized the oulet pipe was small (1 3/4) diameter. None of my H's have such a small diameter pipe and it seemed wrong for a 300 of more power. In my mind most of the time you'd want to get the heat out and a smaller outlet tube would be restricting that. Wondering what other's thoughts would be. I looked at the parts book and the P/N Steiner lists for the muffler I received was not appropriate and they do not have a restoration quality version for that P/N either. They do list another that are the correct dimensions for my manifold pipe and what I think the outlet pipe should be so I am probably going to go for that. I decided to go for this over a Stanley based on some posts on here that state these restoration quality mufflers are a bit quieter then the Stanleys .

The stock muffler outlet on an original H muffler is smaller, but at some point the manufacturers stopped making the small outlet mufflers. I don't know if it was an inventory thing or a demand thing, but up until the mid 2000's you hardly ever saw an H with an original style muffler.

The closest you're going to come is a restoration quality muffler for an M. That would have been the usual replacement for the original 300 muffler, if there is any difference.

Most all Hs these have had the original muffler replaced with a Stanley #IH10. generic 'fits all' for H/M;300-450.Probably 460/560.So we are all used to seeing a bigger outlet.I
think the smaller outlet would be adequet for an H/SH;300,maybe even 350. However It would not be adequet for M and bigger

I bought the same muffler, but through Pilot Knob and absolutely love the sound and look of it on my Super H. The smaller outlet is not
an issue and is just like I remember as a kid.

My 300 muffler had the larger outlet on it and it bellowed so loudly it would deafen you in a few minutes. I ordered the same muffler from Steiner with the 1 1/2 inch outlet. Boy did that make a difference!!!!! It is very quiet now and does not bellow at all. It runs fine and I am not going deaf any more from the loud muffler on it from the beginning. I highly recommend the smaller outlet muffler!!!!!!

Original muffler when built had the smaller outlet on 300 and 350 farmall. IH used a bunch of different muffler numbers over the
years. Some with big outlet were later listed as optional for a H, SH, 300, 350 and will work for the small outlet number.

I had an IH 460 series muffler on my Super H since the day we got it delivered, May 8, 1968. The muffler
had been on our '39 H since summer of '64 when Dad had it repainted and the beat-up old M muffler got
it's second coat of aluminum paint that burned off in the first 15 minutes.
The small outlet is probably fine for a straight H but exhaust flow is directly proportional to
engine displacement and RPM. And things like piston tempurature, exhaust valve temp, spark plug temp is
ALL dependent on the exhaust of an engine evacuating hot exhaust gasses as quickly as possible.
I run 2-1/2 x .035 wall 304 polished stainless steel staight pipes on both my FARMALLS, SH & M. If
I had a need to run one of them wide open all day pulling moderately to very hard they would have a
Muffler on them, the SH would have the 460 Restoration muffler, M would have the M restoration muffler.
If the restoration mufflers are not quiet enough for you when working your FARMALL's you probably
better start looking at automotive aftermarket mufflers. A turbo style muffler would be quieter than
anything you can see straight through.

IH was selling this number in 1962. On the next page they list another optional one for the tractors. Same number listed for a M through 450 at that time. Other numbers were sold depending on time frame.

The outlet size might affect acoustics more than the power of the engine. Even a straight pipe does not change the power output by much, but it changes the noise level much more.
