300 utility hydrualics

I have a 300 utility. I have most things operating the way I want now. However I do have this problem where it seems like the hydraulic pump works the engine while not operating the hydraulics. So describe this a little better. When I start the engine it seems to pulsate loading the engine, now if I move the hydraulic lever up or down it goes away. However when I stop moving the lever it returns. This seems to be intermitant (sp), meaning sometimes it doesn't happen at all and sometimes after warm up it will go away.

I had a 560 do the exact thing you are describing and there was a piece of debris stopping up a tiny orifice in the regulator.
I know most people will say to check the single to double-acting selector on the hydraulic spool as well. Make sure it is either set to single or double and not somewhere in the middle, because the little roll pin likes to break off and they get turned past the detent.

The selector is right on the front of the control valve. I has flats on it for a wrench.
You can see in the picture where the roll pin goes through it and into the spring detent to hold it in either single or double acting postion.

I will check that out. I did try to do some searching and came across a topic that said to check the pressure relief valve. That a hole or screen can be plugged. Any idea where that would be located? The case ih parts website is currently not working.

That is exactly the orifice I was talking about, there is a straw shaped screen over it and on mine, it was collapsed. It's inside the regulator, The regulator looks like a control valve but there won't be a handle coming out of it.
Here is a picture of it:

The 4 bolt rectangle cap comes off the front. You have to be careful taking it off because it has the heavy spring under it. I usually take two opposite corner bolts out and replace them with threaded rods and nuts. Then remove the other two bolts and use the nuts on the threaded rod to carefully release the spring tension. The orifice comes out with a flat-headed screwdriver. It is off to one side in the middle.

No doubt you will ruin the gasket when taking the cover off but they are readily available at CaseIH dealers. The orfice has screw driver slot to remove it. Cut the end off the screen to clean and th en just roll it up a half turn or so. Original orfice was stamped .024 and replacement ones are .031. I would also pull the piston opposite one with heavy spring and blow it out good. Make sure spring inside piston is not broken as it should not rattle. Replace o ring with proper number, not just one that fits. If screen is ruined as they often are, a new orfice is spendy.

OH, you don't have to drain . Also, I just determined I have been spelling orifice wrong all these years. Was omitting the first i.

The orifice screen was ruined on my 560 and I had to buy a new one. It was about 10 years ago and it was $50 then.
