300 Utility screaming

My grandpas old ih 300U was parked due to a whine and 20 years later I went thru the carb and fired it up and you can’t even hear the motor over it. Grandpa claims the PTO needs adjusting but it just doesn’t seem right as it does it no matter the rpm or if the PTO is on or off. Just was curious of if anyone knew the problem or had the same problem will attach a vid of it running sorry it’s not very long 👍

If it where me I'd take and fan belt off and fire it up and see if that stops the noise. If it does then you have either a bad water pump or generator/alternator.

That is an ugly sound. In addition to Old's suggestion how about the hydraulic pump - any oil getting to it. All the oil could be in the pan due to a bad seal. If that noise is coming from the PTO as grandpa suggested its a lot more than an adjustment

Welcome to YT forums and ASAP parts. Several possibilities. One is the hydraulics could be making the noise due to being "on demand". This is often caused by a plugged up screen and orifice in the regulator safety valve. it is located between the rear hydraulic control valve for the hitch and the reservoir. In the link it is illustration 282 (the first one) as part 19. Illustration 310 and 312 are details. Part #10. it must be clean and unobstructed. Using the rear Fast Hitch valve might change the sound if that is the issue.
Other possible factors include bearings in the generator, Fan hub, and distributor drive. The hydraulic noise seems often to be pervasive and not easy to trace. (I am a 350U owner) Jim

Why not check the hyd oil and make sure them levers are in neutral is a good starting point

Good idea! The dip stick is located under the seat. all valves to the right of the seat have 3 positions the front two are accessory and not connected (from image) the valves have 3 positions W/neutral in the middle. The fluid is Hytran from IH, or other fluid that is (actually) labeled as meeting the specification. Jim

I would also suggest checking the transmission fluid level there is a check plug near the clutch pedal. At least run a wire in there with a bend on it to make sure it is at least with in an inch of the plug hole, it takes HyTran or an equivalent as mentioned above. If the brake/clutch through shaft seals leaked and the tractor was run low on transmission lubrication this could very well have caused the problems you are hearing from damaged gears or bearings. If you find the trans lube level way overfull this could be an indication of large amounts of water in the trans. Whether you find this or not it would be a good idea to crack the trans drain plugs (there are 3) and see if water is in there. Also there is a possibility that front timing gears of the engine have a problem and are making the noise.

Ok I’m back sorry forgot about the thread I did infact try the fan belt thing and it didn’t help. It sounded like the tranny is screaming and not the motor. It’s currently 30 and below with snow for a while so I’ll wait until the garage is empty and I’m finished restoring my super c. My dad said the noise started when he hit a dirt mound while brush hogging so I figure it spun a transmission bearing👍 the hydraulic levels were all in neutral and I didn’t check the fluid so will do. Have a good day.

Does that tractor have 'live' pto? Where you can clutch and stop forward motion, shift gears and the pto still runs? It may have twisted the pto shaft or the shaft back to the pto shaft.

Hydraulics. Middle of the machine. Well, or front right I guess too.
Pto. Rear of the machine.
Fan belt/ generator etc. front of the machine.

So is the sound coming from which end of the tractor, or middle? Should be able to localize it pretty easy.

Bent a shield around the flywheel ?

It is a pretty good little tractor from experience. If the noise is, - engine running and tractor in neutral, it most probably is engine, clutch or hydraulic noise. Listen carefully and you will find the source. A good overall service may solve the problem.

How about the PTO drive splines in the rear of the clutch disc? Although mine stripped out when I was a kid, and I do not remember any noise.

Engaging the pto actually quiets it down if that is the problem, in my experience any how.

I hope we get some feedback from the original poster, so we all can learn. Really wasn’t much info as to where the noise is coming from.
